I'm usually quite security oriented, and throughout the years I steadily increased my protection.
First with different and strong passwords, then with a password manager, then with a vpn and soon with a usb access key.
Naturally, I have grown interested in this whole new Passkeys thing...
Is anyone having problems setting up passkeys? When I attempt to set them up I get a message that I need to enable iCloud Keychain. I have enabled the iCloud Keychain, and I continue to get a msg stating that I need to set it up. Could it have anything to do with VPN?
A while ago I tried moving my Google accounts over to Passkeys for 2FA. I'd change an account to use Passkey, move onto the next account, but then the previous account would have its Passkey removed. I did not realize this was happening and I almost lost all my accounts, luckily I was already...
Being a crotchety cynical old man, I try hard not to get my hopes up but I fear that Apple's Passkey has broken down my resistance. I really hope the Passkey concept gets implemented and universally accepted. And it isn't really for web site authentications.

So I like the idea of the new Passkeys in iOS 16 but was wondering:
If I buy a new iPhone or iPad etc, will I still need to know my Apple ID password to set up my new device?
If we are trying to move away from passwords, how will it work in this situation?
Sign In with Apple was the precursor for Passkeys. Given the way it's been engineered, it looks like all of those that have added support for Sign In with Apple will work from the get go with Passkeys – if not directly, then through Sign In With Apple which will look and act the same when...
