I have Mojave 10.14 and used TM which did always the backup without any errors.
Now, after replacing my SSD, I formatted it to Mac OS Extended in Recovery Utilities (didn’t give me the option to format to APFS) and proceeded to restore the backup (720GB).
All good here, took almost 5 hours...
Around Thanksgiving last year, I had to restore my laptop from a Time Machine backup. What was a little stressful was the most recent backup didn't work. I had to go back a week or more to a version that fully restored completely.

My 2011 MBP is slowly dying and I have managed to create a time machine back up. It has a 1TB SSD and 1TB HDD instead of optical drive. All storage, pictures, music is on sata HDD and OS etc is on SSD.

My plan is to use it as a duplicate rig of my main mac in my studio. I've done a timemachine back up of my main studio mac and want to restore that back up to my new backup so both machines...
Yesterday I upgraded from 10.10 Yosemite to 10.13 High Sierra. Everything seemed fine ... but when I opened Calendar, every single entry and almost every calendar was gone!
I tried restoring from Time Machine, using the backup created just before downloading 10.13. It restored every entry up...
