I stupdily upgraded my jailbroken, unlocked 1.1.4 iphone to 2.0 in a moment of madness. Nothing worked at one point not even detected by itunes, but I put it in DFU mode restored in iTunes then in a last gasp attempt started the iTuens official activation process. I got to the point of entering my apple ID and the phone activated itself running 2.0 firmware, I was not asked to select a tariff or enter payment details.....

Does anyone know why this worked, and if i'm now likley to see a bill.

i suppose because they are allowing people to put o2 pay and go sims in their old iphones when the buy a new one. so it seems they can't differentiate between those you have not transferred a contract to a new phone (such as you) and those that have.

dont worry

that is the new o2 activation rules... o2 are officially allowing people to use their o2 sim cards in original iphones, whether they are pay monthly or payg. you can check the o2 help and support section to confirm this. the only downside of using your current o2 contract sim is that the iphone may use EDGE and hence charge you if you dont have an internet bolt-on.

i myself have upgraded a ziphone unlocked 1.1.4 iphone to 2.0 through itunes without using any third party software... it upgraded fine and then asked the iphone to be activated - here there is an option to skip half of the registration process by clicking "this is not my iphone" - and hey presto! you have an activated iphone 2.0! im using an o2 simplicity contract simcard.

so o2 users - no need to unlock your iphone anymore! :)

Thanks for the info. At one point I was ready to bin the phone.
