Hi all, i have 2x sticks of 1gb (apple) and 2x sticks of 2gb (crucial) in my mac pro at the moment, both bloody FB-DIMMs of course. It seems one of the 2gb has died on me so I either need to replace the two or (hopefully) find a matching stick for the one good module. Does anyone have such a thing or know where i can buy one? I know it's a long shot but that ram is damn expensive and I'd rather not drop £150 on two new sticks if I can help it!

Call around to the 3rd party repair shops that handle Macs in your area. It would seem to me you are looking for somebody whose Mac Pro has bit the dust, and the shop is parting out the bits and bobs.

I've got the 2008 MP, and it's a workhorse.... worth it to keep it going.

Alternatively, bite the bullet and replace the 2 x 1GB sticks with a pair of 2GB sticks. You might like the performance bump. This is on the theory that if you are already spending some money on memory, it might be worth bumping it up a bit. You can mix-n-match different sizes. I've got 4x1GB and 2x4GB in my 8 core.

Good Luck.

A while back I posted about aftermarket RAM failing in my 2008 Pro also. Seems to be a not uncommon issue with third-party RAM sticks in the Pros.

Anyway, one helpful poster said to check the warranties on the RAM sticks, as some of the major retailers (OWC, Crucial, etc.) may have a "lifetime" warranty or replacement guarantee if a stick fails.

[whipping myself with a wet noodle] Duh! ...of course that should have been the 1st step.... should have thought of that myself.... Good Call Velin.

Yep, this occurred to me when too so I checked out crucials returns policy aaaaaand not time limited it seems! Waiting for an RMA now so fingers crossed :D

Thanks for your input!

Just an update for anyone interested, I now have an RMA number and will be shipping the dodgy ram (and it's less troublesome brother) back to crucial hopefully for a replacement, yay!

RMA successful! I now have two brand new sticks of 2gb FB-DIMMs, thank you Crucial and your generous warranties! :D
