I have a 08 Mac Pro running 10.6 and while I was using it, it suddenly shut down. I tried to press the power button on. I can hear the click sound but just after 1-2 seconds, another click sound occurs and the power light is off... So I even couldn't see any grey screen nor the apple logo... Seems like it shuts down again by its own... Does anyone have any idea what has happened?? It frequently shut down on its own previously. I repaired the permission and went back to normal now, it shut down completely and won't allow to boot up the system at all... Many thanks!!

I had similar symptoms.
In my case, this was a power supply problem.
Not sure if that is what is happening for you.
I replaced the PSU and it fixed the problem.

Seems like a common thing for the 08 MPs.

That being said, I defer to the experts here.
It could be many other things.

08 mac pros, are like the first gen xbox 360's. Powersupply has to fail at least once, just like a RROD has to happen sometime down the line.

that was my experience.

sigh... Now I see. I took the machine to check the problem and hope it's just the power unit issue. 08 Mac Pro seems to be have tons of problem and ram are still way much more expensive.... Waiting for the new mac pro...
