1.0.1 Upgrade... HELP!

Hi, I'm a total noob when it comes to the iPhone hack scene but I have an US import and it is currently running Firmware 1.0.1 (1C25) and I want to upgrade to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 OR 1.1.3 for various reasons. But I have a few questions about it:

1. How could I do it?
2. IF I updated through iTunes, would I end up with a brick?
3. Would I still be able to use my o2 sim in it even though it was meant to work with AT&T (I don't know how this was acheived as the phone did belong to my uncle be he gave it to me )

I hope there is a way to do it.

Which service did you use to unlock your iPhone? IPSF or anySIM?

Honestly, I have no idea. Is there a way I could find out? I have had a look through installer and it didn't mention either of those.
