1.1.1 Filesystem opened

This is good....but it doesn't mean a whole lot until they're able to execute something. Good news nonetheless though!
 
uh, yeah. I just read through the blog and it turns out that this also made it impossible for her to use the phone as a phone. Sounds like there's still quite a bit of work to be done. Oh well, big step though.
 
I read through the blog, sure, using that ssh method she has access to the phone file tree..

But at the same time, doing that method bricked her phone... so she has access to the file tree but doesn't have access to the phone..

this is a huge step...
 
This is great and all, but there really is no compelling reason to update to 1.1.1 anyway. The only reason this is exciting as far as I am concerned is that it will encourage 3rd party developers to release some new stuff (development seemed to have stagnated lately).

Right, because developers want to know that more than a handful of people are going to be able to benefit from their apps. I'm still working on bugfixes for my app iSplit, but I'll be honest, I've sort of been hanging back waiting to see what new stuff apple offers or how quickly the hackers are able to open things back up for installer.app.

If they get this going some time in the next week, I expect to start a whole new project, as well as release some substantial improvements for iSplit.
 
This game of 'cat and mouse' is ridiculous...it will get so tedious whenever Apple sends out an update and the whole "file system opened" "Write access acquired" stuff happens...
 
Does anyone think it's possible that Apple rewrote things to make 3rd party applications run more like native apps? Once the next hack is fully understood, it could very well be easier once discovered than past methods of adding apps.

Tedious? I find this very interesting to watch.

I think Apple need to think long and hard about what this does in terms of PR. They may have to rethink a strategy at some point. I think that possibility is what makes this an interesting thing to watch.

No. How could things POSSIBLY get easier than over the air GUI installs with installer.app?

This seems like a strange thing to suggest, did you just need something to restore your faith?
 
If 1.1.1 does in fact get opened back up I really hope some one figures out how to make te WiFi store run on EDGE...thats really all i want...until then I watch and wait...
 
I predict within 6 days a method will be found to install 3rd party apps on 1.1.1 ... I also predict that Apple will release an update in 2 weeks that will add some sort of Leopard functionality, but again will break 3rd party apps.

Of course, this is just a wild prediction of mine

The thing is tho that 1.1.2 will probably be just "bug fixes" to patch the hack, unless they add new features i dont see what they can do to convince people to upgrade to 1.1.2.... 1.1.1 with apptapp could make me never update my iphone again

They won't close off that bug until a major feature is released. 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 were bug fix releases, people didn't really want to upgrade till 1.1.1.

Any updates until the next major release will just toy with 3rd party developers. :p
