I currently have a phone that came with 1.1.1 loaded on it, which I unlocked. Then when 1.1.2 came out I upgraded yet again using the iNdependence instructions (that is, with that Pre-Firmware Upgrade/Oktoprep thing).

Now I want to go from 1.1.2UL'd to 1.1.4UL'd.

Do I just restore in iTunes or do I have to do anything special (like holding option in iTunes and picking the firmware manually) or do I have to do a oktoprep-like upgrade or enter DFU mode in iNdependence before I upgrade the firmware via iTunes?

You could use Independence!

You no longer have to take any steps before JB/Activating the phone - just upgrade to 1.1.4 then use Independence.

Unlocking is another matter! If your phone is IPSF unlocked then you need signal.app to get a signal in 1.1.4 (it remains unlocked but needs a little coaxing to work) alternatively if you used AnySIM before then ZiPhone will unlock the 1.1.4 firmware for you.

Have a look at www.hackthatphone.com as it has step by step instructions and pictures for Independence on 1.1.4.

BTW Independence has an unlock built in as well but it downgrades the baseband to the same as you have now (1.1.2 baseband) while ZiPhone unlocks the 1.1.4 baseband.

Its worth noting that Independence has better code for JB/Activating but if you don't have IPSF ZiPhone is better for unlocking.

Also note that if your phone is newer ZiPhone would downgrade your bootloader which can cause wi-fi issues however as your phone was 1.1.1 (or earlier) out the box that will not happen as it has the older bootloader already!

check out hackthatphone.com its very useful!
