I recently received 3 Mac Pros: 2x 1,1 and 1x 3,1. They were sold as is, so issues were expected. Given that the 3,1 is the most interesting of the bunch, I want to get that one working.
The 3,1 came with a 2600XT and some 8GB of RAM I believe. Sadly, when booting either my Leopard or El Capitan bootable, I encounter issues. With Leopard I can reach the language selection screen of the installer, but I only see that for a mere second. After that the display turns off. With the El Capitan installer, I reach the 'black screen' at about 3/4ths of the loading bar. There is no 'no signal' on my display either, just a black screen. It seems fans turn off as well, and it enters a standby mode, because the front LED is still on. DIAG leds vary between 2, 7, 8, 9 and 7, 8, 9.

Yes, I did the command-option-p-r (PRAM reset I believe?) and the 'disconnect mains, press power button 15 sec to bleed'. I also replaced the CR2032.

First idea was to swap the GPU. I replaced the 2600XT with a 7300GT, but that gave me no display at all. I later read that the 7300GT may not be supported on the 3,1, so I bought myself an HD5770 1GB Mac edition. This has the same behaviour as the 2600GT, sadly. Interestingly enough, putting the 2600GT into one of the 1,1s, I also reach a dropped display output just when the language chooser of the Leopard installer appears.

Second idea was the RAM being faulty. I swapped around a whole lot of RAM, reseated it etc, but that also had no change. I still cannot boot the 3,1 to the installer.

My hunches then are as follows:
- Bad PSU. However, I do see a boot splash, so it seems odd that it cannot run something as simple as the installer.
- Broken front I/O. If the power on button keeps hanging, it might explain why it dives into stand by/psu trickle. However, that does not explain why the installer always crashes at the same spot.
- Driver issues. That would explain why the installer always crashes at the same spot - due to some weird incompatibility.
- General hardware failure, indeterminable. Speaks for itself.

I do have to say, these Macs have no drives in them. However, given that I can boot the 1,1s with the 7300GT fine with no fixed drives, I'm assuming that may not be the issue.

If anyone has any interesting tips, I'm all ear! And if necessary, I could always try to Frankenstein one of the 1,1 PSUs into the 3,1, if that means I can reach the installer. Don't think the lack of amperage will be beneficial in the long run, given the HD5770 and 2x QC Xeons.

EDIT:
Just put the HD5770 into a 1,1 and booted with Lion. Same behaviour. I see the gray Apple, I see the spinning wheel and after that boom, no display output anymore. Given that I see this behaviour in the 1,1 ánd 3,1, could it then really be the lack of storage that prevents these Macs from booting?

Used this USB stick on the different 1,1 - that worked fine. That's one of the 1,1s with the 7300GT.

This is the last thing I see before the Mac shuts itself off. I have done the SMC resets.

EDIT 42:
Okay, so now the 1,1s both consistently boot into the Lion installer, don't know why. Seems that part is solved now.
What remains is the 3,1. It keeps on shutting down during boot, sometimes early in the process, sometimes late in the process. Could that be simple dust?

Could be failing Northbridge chip on the logic board because of bad contact/failed thermal paste on the black heatsink?

Hi! Thanks for the reply. That would make sense, I think. I replaced the PSU and I see the same intermittent behaviour of dropping display output. What's generally the verdict on this? Replace thermal compound or is the logic board pining for the fjords?

Tested 2 different 1,1s in my 3,1, still a drop of signal. So it isn't the PSU, that's for sure now. It would suck if it were the logic board, indeed.

This is a link for the service manual MP 2008 , personally I'd start with checking all fans, dedusting and repaste . There's loads of info in this pdf about maintenance and a chapter about troubleshooting.
Hope to be of some help...

Thanks for the reply!
I'm now at the point where I have one working 1,1 with 28GB RAM and the HD5770.
If I put the same hardware (so that is PSU, RAM ánd GPU which I now know are good) into the 3,1, the display and GPU fans shut off after boot into El Capitan. It happens at different points, but always after logon. All LEDs are fine at that point. I have read through the PDF's troubleshooting part, but I haven't found anything regarding boot to desktop and then shutoff. It sometimes goes into sleep, sometimes no sleep but also no display. To me that seems odd to be thermal related, or is that a possibility still?

I suppose with "boot El Capitan" you refer to a USB with a clean El Capitan installer (?).
If you swapped a patched El Capitan drive for a 1,1 into the 3,1 , this will not work.

Ah, my apologies, I should have been more clear.
What happened was the following: I installed a clean Lion onto the 3,1 Mac. After a boot of the install USB, the Mac went into sleep. I pressed the power button, and the installer appeared! I then proceeded as usual, being able to install Lion to the 3,1 without too much issues, though it would still sometimes drop display.
Then I downloaded the official El Capitan update from the Apple website and managed to install that one, though there were still display drops and hangups. I'm now at the point where Lion works for a minute or something, but El Capitan stops working after a few seconds. Sometimes I can put the Mac to sleep and wake, which then gives display for a few minutes, before dropping display again.

If I use the same Lion installer on the 1,1 Mac with the same RAM, GPU ánd PSU, I have zero hangups or graphical glitches. El Capitan has not ran on the 1,1 (yet, at least).

It's a bit confusing, I know, sorry for that.

Thx for the description!

Perhaps PCIe slot 1 (where the GPU is ) is flaky.
You could test the GPU in slot 2 (and double check the power cable).
Another point could be the battery BR2032 (CR2032 is good enough for testing but isnt meant for higher Temps).
A failing battery can cause strange issues.
Battery voltage should be 3,0V minimal.

Hope others can chime in!

I'll give Slot 2 a go soon!
And regarding the battery, that's something I indeed already did, but forgot to mention. The CR2032 I took out was at 2.8V. The one I put in is at 3.01V, so that should not be the issue I believe.

The weird thing is, it doesn't feel like a thermal shutdown. I have seen those happen on PCs, and that just takes out the entire computer, not just one slot. But yeah, a flaky slot could be the issue. I'll report back as soon as I've transplanted the 5770. Again.

I can now at least confirm that both 1,1s are fully functional. I suspect issues with my USB stick. They both boot into Lion fine now, and as far as Lion goes, that's usable.

EDIT:
Yeah nah, she's still running weirdly with the 5770 in the second slot. In the "Install Mac OS X" screen, so where you just wait and don't click anything, I had no display. I pressed the power button once, and then she went into sleep with the 'breathing' power LED. She did then not listen to a USB wake. I pressed the power button several times, and only after the 7th try (don't know if it was 5th or 10th, so 7th it is), she came back to life, happily installing Lion again. That's not really usual, is it?

Same issue with the first time config. Also, my Mac started talking to me for some reason.

Started the El Capitan update - saw the gray Apple screen and then it was over.

EDIT i don't even know anymore:
It seems to be my Dell screen! I just plugged the Mac into my other HP and everything is back again.

EDIT i don't even know anymore + 1:
After switching monitors the Mac now works flawlessly. I'm running El Capitan and the only display drop I had, was when I hadn't used the Mac for long enough. You have to be kidding me... Welp, maybe time to look for a GTX680, if she keeps on working. Might be nice to run Catalina.

@KeesMacPro and @Nguyen Duc Hieu Thank you both for your input. I can now confirm, after having installed El Capitan ánd Snow Leopard without any display drops, that my Dell Display does not like these Macs. My HP display has no issues at all... As a PC user, I have never ever encountered before. Is this common? And is there a way to mitigate this, maybe by using a different DVI-D cable? Anyway, once again thank you for you input!

Good to hear your MPs work fine!

Supposing the Dell got a DisplayPort connector, it could be worth a test to see if the Dell works fine connected through a Displayport cable.
I assume it will...:)

So, it took me a while, but I can finally confirm a GTX680 with HDMI and DP works fine. I haven't tested DVI and I'm not really interested in doing so ;-) And so, the cMP continues its life with Catalina!
