1&1 UK Dedicated Hosting, Opinions?

I'm looking around at possibly moving my dedicated hosting service to a new provider and I've come across 1&1 (how could I miss them given their 10 page advert in Edge this month!).

Seems they offer a very good deal for the 'Business Server I' (Root Server). In summary this:

AMD Athlon 64 3,500+
1 GB DDR RAM
2x160 GB hard drive (RAID1) * Software RAID afaics
Unlimited 100Meg connection
Remove serial and power management.
A bunch of other stuff.

Seems a pretty good deal for the £58 ppm they're charging.

Does anyone have any opinions on their dedicated hosting product? I'm not too bothered about support as long and the hardware, power and network stay up as I'll be administering the server myself.

Are they too cheap to reliably offer the service they're promising? Any comparable alternatives in the UK?

I don't know about the UK division, but I almost went with 1&1 US, and just before I clicked "Sign up now", I figured I should research a little more. Type 1&1 into google... I doubt you will find one good thing said about them. I think it's mostly their service, so if you don't think you'll ever need to contact them, you _might_ be ok...

Just thought I'd warn you... I don't have any personal experience with them, but be cautious.

Hmm yeah they don't look like great reviews. It's kind of hard to tell what people have had problem with tho, they do a lot of shared hosting, email provision etc.. which I won't be using.

It's a shame they don't offer a '30 day money back guarantee' or similar.

I don't think they have a UK presence or at least I couldn't find any details on it? I'm really looking for a UK host.

I use ukhost4u.com for some stuff and they have been pretty good. I have never used their dedicated services, but the shared hosting is good and their support has always been really helpful & prompt.

I use 1&1 in the US (not a dedicated machine) and they are not bad. Uptime is very good, and my plan if full of features considering the price. I had 1 problem and they lady on phone support was terrible. I wrote an email and the problem was fixed in a matter of hours.

Basically, I would not tell anyone to stay away from them, nor would I highly recommend them. I guess they are about average.
 
I use 1&1 for email hosting. When their service works, it works well. However, when there are problems, they are utterly abysmal. Not only that, they aren't upfront when there are problems ( do a search on The Reg about 1&1's last email outage ).

I'm currently looking for a web and email host. 1&1 aren't on the list.

I used to have the root server from 1and1 (before it was upgraded to 3500)
I have to say, never had a problem and would recommend. the 100mbit connection is true had it maxxed out many a time.
A few things to note.
While the bandwidth is unmetered, you get 100mbit connection for 1TB, if you go over you get limited to 10mbit, but you can instantly bump it back upto 100mbit from the website console, so nothing to worry about.
The servers are actually located in Germany, so if you look at the german 1and1 you see you get more than twice as powerful server for less money, but of course you cant sign up to the german one, which is a bit annoying :)
From my experiences, its worth getting, ive heard alot of bad stuff about 1and1 but never actually experienced it, so just giving you my 2p's worth :)

I'm a new user of 1&1 in the US and they've been great so far. We had one problem getting set up, but they fixed it in about an hour and were really good on the phone (very up front about the issue, and actually explained it to my fiance in detail after he said he was a technician [he just likes knowing what's going on, but most support centers won't go into detail for him]).

No down time so far since signing up, so I'd recommend 'em for sure.. especially considering their prices.
