A situation has arised that Apple are willing to send me 1GB of RAM as a 1GB stick - my macbook currently has 2x512MB RAM sticks.

Is it worth going up to 1.5GB of RAM or would the fact the RAM is not matched make it slower or have a negative effect on my macbook? Thanks.

Go for it. The extra 0.5 GB for 1.5 GB in total will negate the small gain from having 1.0 GB of matched RAM.

Free RAM? From Apple? Sweet deal.

More ram is always better than less matched pair ram. The matched pair thing is only marginal anyway.
