I agree w/ your review. The SSD model is better in terms of durability (cause the hdd is less likely to crash) but on normal real world use, the HDD model shows very little performance difference.
Thanks! Feel much better for being cheap. I was seriously on the fence and thought it out long and hard before springing for the 1.6 / 80. You've confirmed my hypothesis regarding cost vs. real world gains on the two systems.
I have a 1.6 and I have had the opportunity to use the ssd at the Apple Store quite a bit. My subjective opinion (for what I do) the difference is minimal at best. It has to be at least partially a function of what you do on the computer. Like people say it takes the MacBook Air 2 minutes to boot. Mine never takes longer than about 40 seconds. My MacBook Pro takes 30 seconds. So, would I take an SSD for a few hundred dollars more? I think yes. For a $1000 more I'd have to say no.
The review pretty much summed it up for me, I'll go with the 1.6 and HD... though it will be more than 1 ghz behind the processors of my Mac Pro, I won't be editing video or running intensive programs on it. Thanks for the review, much appreciated.
I agree with TeeRexx54, its so slight, to those who paid the 1K extra, it a beautiful smooth machine, But for my needs the cost is a bit much when it 300.00 more then a HDD I will bite, even though mine was free, I really prefer the 1.6/80.....
It's not that I wouldn't like a SSD model, I just don't think the extra $1300 would be noticed in what I do. Jeez, I could buy a whole new extra MB or iMac with that money. I'll wait until prices get a little more sane before I jump on the SSD wagon.
You know I didn't think of it that way but you are right. Its like another whole MacBook difference in price.
I know absolutely nothing about the SSD other than what I have played with it in the Apple Store. It's great. It would be nice to see a 128GB option ( a more realistic size for a HD) on a MacBook Air or any Apple notebook. But I can't see that being affordable for at least 12 months.
I also wondering how every one feels about the resale of the SSD MacBook Air in say 6 months to a year vs the 1.6
I think the 1.6 will hold value and you have the option of upgrading to a SSD...... not sure about the 1.8......

Bingo. Once SSD prices go down I'd think the HDD models will hold much better resale value compared to the SSD models.
Note that I have not bought the MBA, but I have certainly considered going the route of 1.6/80 and selling within a year. Only thing that's stopping me is that I can afford to wait until v2 of the MBA to see what the landscape is b/c ultimately I would like to go with the SSD and I'd really like 4GB of RAM (not necessarily for present needs for for long-term usage).

I can't see why not. It's already been done on a 1.6 and the 1.8 is the same except for 200MHz faster.
Just to be clear: an upgrade from an HD to a SSD has already been done ? Would you have any info/details/link about that ?

Yes, I will post a photo DIY this weekend my friend just but in a 128G and i filmed it...
The prices will come down. I plan on using my dinky lil' 80 until it dies then upgrade to a SSD myself. It'll make it feel like new again. I've already taken my Air apart and it looks as easy as Anandtech wrote to replace it. MUCH easier than a MBP by the way.

When I bought my SSD I was not thinking of potential resale value, I was thinking of MY actual use NOW and for as long as I will be using this machine. I also considered the possibilities of a "transplant" of a larger-capacity SSD in the future and it seemed to me that probably it would be easier to do with another SSD already in the machine rather than with a standard HD because of cabling and such. There is also the possibility that when Apple brings out version 2 or rev B of the MBA that there will be other enhancements that would lead me to simply buy a new machine rather than replacing the innards of my current one. Whatever....
I think all of the models of the MBA are just terrific and I am glad that Apple did provide us with choices which would fit various budgets and various needs.
