I am going to be purchasing one of these in about a month, its just im not sure if the extrea$ is really worth it considering everything isnt universal. for the price of a 2.0 i could get a 1.83 + a 20" ACD for the same price (w/student discount)

Working for MI-6
I seriously doubt that there will be a big difference in speed between the listed Intel Core Duo CPUs. If you need every last MHz to get something done well, then yes, a faster CPU will make the difference. But for most people, the speed difference will be negligible.

Now the speed difference between any of the Core Duos compared to a PowerPC G4... :) ;)

What about the other specs?

80 GB HD vs. 100 GB.

512 mb ram vs. 1 GB

ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128MB GDDR3 memory vs ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB GDDR3 memory

Is there a $500 difference there?
I really want to get the 1.83 (and save the cash) but is it worth it with what I lose? I know the speed diff. with the processer is negligible, but is everything else?

There was $500 of value to me. It was worth it to me to spend a little more for the 2.0 (1.83 when I ordered) since I fully expect to have this machine in service for 2.5-3 years at a minimum. At the end of that time, I'm going ot want every MHz I can get to keep performance reasonable. :)

Since I needed the extra disk space anyway, and am never one to go for less VRAM, it was a no-brainer for me.

I doubt that you'd see much difference between a 1.83 and 2.0, but more so between the 1.83 and the 2.16. Likewise, there wouldn't be a lot of difference between the 2.0 and the 2.16.

What people seem to misunderstand is obsoletion. Both a 1.83 Core Duo and a 2.16 Core Duo will become obsolete at the same time. In fact, 2 years from now, you're going to be laughing at the 0.33 GHz difference in speed, because both will seem slow compared to the new stuff at the time. They'll be seen as virtually the same speed. But right now, there seems to be a big difference when there isn't one.
