1.83 iMac or 1.83 MacBook Pro???

Ok, I can't decide if I want a MacBook Pro or a 17" iMac. I have an iBook and was planning to sell it until yesterday when I saw the iMac Core Duo.

So I can either get a MacBook Pro or keep the iBook and get an iMac.

MacBook Pro Pros:

-Powerful
-Big screen on the go
-Only one machine

MacBook Pro Cons:

-Portability is somewhat limited. larger than what im used to.
-4x SuperDrive instead of 8x on iMac
-Smaller HDD
-Not as strong exterior as iBook

iMac + iBook Pros:

-Big screen
-8x SuperDrive
-Big HD
-Powerful

iMac + iBook Cons:

-Less power on the go
-Smaller more limeted screen. less bright (On the go)

What would you chose?

I'd go for the iMac + iBook combo. Reason is, if say you lost the iBook, or it gets broken somehow, you've still got an iMac to use (also works the other way round) while you wait for the insurance to kick in.

yeah i'm in your same boat man. I sold my computers to get a macbook pro. Now i'm wondering if i want to get a 17inch intel imac and a 12inch powerbook or just have one machine and itbe a macbook pro. I've always had small laptops so to me it would be hard to get used to using a 15 inch widescreen all the time. The deals going on with the new imacs and the 12inch powerbook from amazon are great. Would be $1175 and $1350 shipped on the machines totaling just under 2600 for 2 nice machines. Or do I spend $2200 on a macbook pro alone? I'm not a power user whatsoever so having a 12inch powerbook again isn't a big deal to me.

So I guess the question is.....how much do you travel with ur computer that u would need a lot of power from the macbook pro? Or do you do just light traveling and an ibook would work those few times you go? and you could have the power of the intel imac @ home all the time.

You really should do the iMac/12" PB combo. That would be an awesome set-up...I yhink I'd be a little jealous, so please don't tell us if you go for it.

I have a 20" iMac intel, and a g4 1.5Ghz powerbook, it is great. I love the 20" iMac you would not regret it. I have used 3 laptops at home for a number of years as my main computers, and let me tell you the 20" really is great to have when doing more productive than having to work on a smaller screen.

BTW my display on my PowerBook is 1280 X 884 and the MBP is 1440 x 900
the imac is 1680 x 1050 on the 20" and 17" is 1440 x 900.

Another thing to remember is that you can span on the MBP so you could add another monitor for home.

There is no resolution difference on the MBP or the 17" iMac, the question is who many DVD's. HD space is another important factor. my 80GB is not enough, I also have another 250 GB external, and my 20" has 250 GB internal and all are about 50% used. All those TV show, music, video, and photos, start become a lot. I have an 8MP camera, and have over 3000 pictures.

I like the idea of 2 computers, why not purchase the 20" iMac DC it still cheaper than the MBP, you still have you portable for those on the go needs.

When I finish College and I have my own pad, i Plan on getting an iMac simply due to that I already have my trusty iBook for portable computing but like something more powerful for every day use with a larger screen. I went to the Apple store and fell in love with the iMac. Really a nice package that is quite powerful (was viewing 1080i video demos at full speed compared to 0 FPS on iBooks at the Apple store). iMac/iBook is one of Apple's best combos for most people right now because that combo is similar in cost to a MacBook Pro.

Get the iMac CD and MacBook Combo...that would be the best combo.

Just get a 17' Intel iMac and a 12' iBook. It will only cost you $300 more than a base Macbook Pro but it is worth it (even better if you need to use the classic enviorment)
