iPod 1 gig nano won't unlock?

My friend just showed me his nano and said he can't get it to unlock. Sho' nuff, the hold switch does not do anything. If its plugged in, it turns on and seems it would function normally if it would unlock.

Any suggestions for DIY? Not quite worth visiting an apple store
