I recently switched to Verizon and picked up a Verizon S5 on a 2 year contract for $99. My thought process was that if the iPhone 6 is a killer I'd be able to sell it for more, make a small profit and then buy the iPhone 6. That said the quirks of the S5 are bugging me and I'm thinking about going back and picking up an iPhone 5s for the same price (even exchange). If I get the 5s and then want to turn around and resell in order to get the iPhone 6 in a month, which phone will have the higher resale value, the current galaxy s5 or the (then) 1 year old iPhone 5s?

I know it's a flawed way of thinking. But I'm basically already in the camp of thinking the iPhone 6 will be my next device so I'm trying to maximize my possible profit.

The 5S is still going for around $400, and that's for a fair condition one.

If it doesn't cost you anything to switch to a 5S now - then there will be much of a muchness when the iPhone 6 is out resale value.

IF however it costs you any additional $ to go from the S5 to 5S I would simply wait till the iPhone 6 is out.

I'd have to pay a $35 restock fee.

Willing to bet you will need to pay for the month service prorated on that line regardless. I did with the Nokia Icon when I returned it.

I don't know what you mean. I'm not cancelling my new line of service, just switching devices which they give you 14 days to do.

I would think that as the new IP6 is released the IP5s will be cost less and less. Especially from used phone sites such as Swappa and or CL.

You might see some carriers start to go as low as $99 or free with 2 year contracts.

But they'll still sell for more than Galaxy S5 in the secondary market. Like 'em or not, iPhones hold their resale value better than any other phone.

Agreed! :) For the most part phones always drop in price or go on sale when the next generation model is released or about to be released.
I picked up a AT&T IP5s on CL for $350 a couple weeks ago.

Generally speaking, and in my own experience, an iPhone held a greater resale value than my Android phone. A year old Android phone fetched me $100 and that seemed like a struggle. My 2 year old iPhone fetched me $300, netting a bit less after shipping.

Even if there are ways to get an iPhone 5 (for example) for under $400, I doubt that Galaxy is going to fetch that amount. I could be wrong.

Something to think about, you could probably get a Moto G and use that until the iPhone 6 comes out, this way when the next iPhone comes out you could still get it at the contract price($200), instead of having to she'll out another $300-$400 after you sell the 5S.

IDK if VZW would reset my eligibility for a device though.

I sold my at&t S5 for $480 about 2 weeks ago. I have a hard time believing a 5s will fetch that much once the 6 comes out.

Maybe not $480, and I certainly wasn't arguing pricing, however, try and sell the Samsung that was bought and sold at the same time after a new one comes out. See if you clear what the iPhone clears.

any combination of you buying a phone, selling it, and then buying an iphone 6 (out of contract) will not yield a profit. you're better off waiting for the iphone 6 to launch and just buy that on contract.

If you're that worried about making an extra $100 on buying and reselling cell phones maybe you should put some serious thought into your career choice.

At what point did I ever make it sound like getting an iPhone 6 on contract was even a possibility? Pretty sure I clearly said that I just joined Verizon in the last week so getting an iPhone 6 on contract isn't an option.

You didn't, but it's sort of hard to believe this switch couldn't wait another 3-4 weeks for the IP6 to be released.
