1 TB hard drive in 2.66 quad core Mac Pro

Hello very smart mac people!

I have a Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core bought August 2007. I have 2 occupied hard drive bays and am looking to fill an additional third bay at this time. My specs say to add as a max drive:

750GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s; 7200 rpm; 16MB cache

My question is, can I actually add a larger drive? Perhaps 750gb was the largest at the time, I'm guessing. I want to add 1TB or larger with a larger cache, etc. Is this possible? I'm not using RAID or anything fancy. I'm just afraid if I buy 1TB or larger and it only uses 750gb I'll have wasted money.

I am currently running two drives with 2 TB each in my 2006 MP - so you can install 1TB without problems (probably even up to 3TB, though i can't confirm anything bigger than 2TB yet).

If you do consider trying a 3TB drive and aren't in any hurry, it's worth noting that both Seagate and Hitachi have just announced/released 4TB drives, so expect to see the 3TB ones drop in price over the coming weeks and months. Not that they are that expensive now.

Also, you'll probably find that 1TB disks are the same price or cheaper than 750GB, 1TB are far more common so are made in larger volumes, and the 2TB are only slightly more expensive again, so even if it does use only 750GB (which I very much doubt) you won't have wasted very much money if any.

Thanks everyone! I think I'm going to go with 1.5 or 2 tb for now! I was worried there'd be restrictions.
