Hi, my mother-in-law went in to the apple store today and bought a Mac, while there she asked if they knew anything about an update. The worker told her that the next iMacs wouldn't come out for another year. Do you think this is true, or was it just a ploy to get her to buy one today?
Thanks

P.L.O.Y.

I don't buy it. They have been out since October, so about 6 or 7 months. The usual product cycle is around 10 months, so I very very highly doubt that they wait a year.

Salesmanship is one thing, but that was just unethical. I'd even document the incident somehow... at least tell the manager.

The question is - What is left to update in an Imac besides better CPU/GPU with the small tweaks?

The only thing I can think of are TV Tuner and Blu-Ray, but both of those contradicts with their Itunes sales efforts.

That and maybe a 30'' screen but that might be unrealistic for the next 5 years. 30'' screens are still very expenssive, even though they are amazing at that size.

backlit keyboard, would be another. really needed, I think.

actually I remember the last iMac update someone on this forum predicted it to be October 20/09 and he was right! what day do you predict is the next iMac update? :)

Yeah definitely mislead her

The salesmen don't have any information until the boxes arrive in the stores. They might be keen Mac Rumors readers; or they might manage to get a sniff of some inside information a day or so early, but they don't know Apple's plans a year ahead.

Your math is off.

They have been out 260 days, nearly 9 months. Average cycle for the imac is 221 days. So its due.

If there is an update anytime soon, i think the general consensus is don't expect it to be anything significant... but i think it will be well before a year.

A salesman will hardly tell a customer that a newer model will arrive soon. Especially with the way apple sell their units. It's not as though they lead the relese through the press and start discounting current stock.

If they start telling people an update is just around the corner - people wont buy their gear.

They don't even know when an update is coming; they typically learn when the site is updated just like their customers. Occasionally (more like rarely), between 1-3 days before launch of something, they'll get in boxes listed with code names in inventory, with giant "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL XX/XX/XXXX" stickers on the boxes themselves. Generally speaking though, they never know just like you and I.

Look how long the Mac Pro has been lingering without an update. Besides little tweaks here and there the iMac will stay the same. Apples push is the iPhone and iPad. then laptops then desktops.

Yes, because Apple can only do two things at a time, and besides it's not even like the MacBooks and iMac have seen significant updates since the iPhone was introduced in January 2007 or like the mini has seen one since the iPad and iPhone 4 were introduced.

You gotta love the sarcasm there :D

Should go back (whilst she can still return it)

And ask him to write and sign on a piece of paper that is a new model comes out within a year (as he said) then she will be able to return her one and exchange it for a new one.

If he can't/won't do that, then he is admitting he does not know and only made it up.

The truth is they do not know and because they do not know they should not make statements like that. My guess is a a iMac Refresh between Sept and Nov

While Apple got away with not updating the mini for a while, I doubt they could keep their flagship product around over a year and a half -- at the same price -- and still be competitive. Especially given that PC manufacuterers update prices and release newer models every 3 months at least.

By this time next year, current mac hardware will look, even more dated and overpriced versus PCs than it does even now.
