Why do all the promotional screenshots on the Apple Watch say 10:09? I understand why the iPhone says 9:41, because that's the time it was officially announced. But Apple Watch was announced at 10:58. It doesn't make sense.

(Almost) All watches use and have used 10:10 for decades in advertisements. Apple decided to move the bar up by 1.

aesthetically from a design perspective, in analog mode, it is symmetrical. And therefor looks good!

This -- the symmetry on analog watches. Also, it looks like a smile :)

In addition, it shows off all the hands without overlapping, displays the company logo, and usually leaves complications like calendar windows more visible.

A common setting is 10:09 and ~3x seconds, which leaves everything visible. Looks like Apple chose 10:09:00 above because it looked even more symmetrical.

An analogue watch "smiles" at you when the hands are at 10:10. Just another marketing trick from Apple trying to pose as a proper watchmaker.

Not trying to pose as a "proper watchmaker," but paying homage to horology and the history of watchmaking.

There's subliminal messaging going on as well. With the hands at the 10:10 position, it subtly shows a check-mark which signals correctness, validation, completion etc.

Like people said before me, to show the most of the watch without overlapping and with a smile. The same idea goes for 8:20 which some watch makers tried at one point, but the frown aspect of it didn't work out too well.
