10.10.1 Security Update question

Can Yosemite push a security update without my permission? I just had a small box in upper right say that a security update had been installed. It went away before i could grab a screen shot. I was confused, because nothing is supposed to update/install without me giving permission (i thought)... and i looked in notification center and app store updates... and neither list any recent updates. Is this normal or a problem?

Was it the NTP security update? Check the app store again. As far as installing automatically, do you have the install security update option ticked in app store preferences?

I don't believe it was "forced" on anyone, I had to download it manually during a visit to the app store, even with my settings as shown in the attached screen shot.

It's automatically installed if you have the option enabled as already said, but if you have the auto-install option unchecked, it's a manual download and install.

Nope, Apple did no such thing. Nothing has been pushed. What did happen was that Apple made a security update available for download via their update system. In OS X Mavericks and Yosemite the software update is, by default, set to automatically download and install those updates. Users can change the settings if they wish. Also a good thing to remember, this system will check for updates after a certain time or at a certain time. That means that you may not see the update, it might take a few hours (and for notebook users that only use the computer a few hours a day it might even take a few days).

There is no push system. It only looks that way because of the default behaviour for automatic checking, downloading and installing.

I also got this message and my mac never before installed updates automatically.
And this mystery update is NOT in the list of installed updates in App store

Thats it.... option was ticked for security updates.... i could have sworn i had nothing checked. I prefer to know what is installed/updated. But it does not show up under recently installed updates, did not know that that would be the case either.

Shows up in my list just like any other regular update, was a manual install for me too.

It showed up on my 2013 rMBP in App Store updates, and I installed it.

However it does not show up in my 2013 Mac Mini's App Store at all.

Both machines are OS X 10.10.1.

Any ideas?
