10.10.3 Photos & iPhone/iTunes

I uploaded my library of 70GB to iCloud via the new Photos app and everything went well until I tried to sync some new music to my phone from my mac. My phone indicates Photos are taking up approx. 4GB with the majority in the Cloud which is correct. However when I synced my phone iTunes reports the phone has the full 70GB on it and now is overcapacity by 20GB and won't sync my music and its having issues.

I have reported it via the feedback assistant but wondered if anyone else has seen this with larger library. I only ask as I want to know if its an iPhone issue a restore will help or if I should just turn it off on the phone.

Make sure the 'optimize' feature is turned on in the iCloud photos settings section of your phone. This will keep the full res photos in the cloud and only the compressed link on your phone (kind of like a thumbnail). Then if you want to view a full res version on your phone you click on the photo and it will download the full res version from the cloud to your phone on demand.

This is a lovely glitch that is part of iCloud photo library. It happens with any size library, it just isn't as noticeable until it gets bigger. And it does it on my iPad and iPhone. It's actually done this since I first turned it on. It says on the device that it is taking up less space, but when you plug it in it shows otherwise. On both of mine the total usage on the device shows as if photos is taking up the full library size, not matching the breakdown of apps below. It's a real bummer that it does this, even when the photos are optimized.
