I just updated to 10.10.3, and after finally managing to the get the restart to install to work (my macbook never manages to restart on its own, it always hangs on an empty desktop) it then pretty much died.

Any one else experiencing this?

Stupidly I set a firmware password the day I unboxed it, and I have yet to make a trip to Apple with my receipt to have it removed.. I just can't handle downtime which is why I haven't done it yet - so jumping into recovery is pretty much a no go right now

Can you boot into safe mode by holding down the shift-key while booting.

Literally just got back into the machine now. I was one step behind because for over a year now I've had a firmware password on this machine that I forgot.. luckily after years of guessing it tonight I managed to remember it ha.

For others: I ended up removing the firmware password to allow me to boot into safe mode, which weirdly then proceeded to continue the installation of the 10.10.3 update (the screen was making some strange rippling and flash animations too?) - needless to say I'm back on safely now, but for anyone else it would seem there's a video driver that's not playing ball for some people, I managed to find others on Google reporting it so do take it into consideration if you are yet to do the update and have the same spec rMBP as me.
