I am new to Apple and this is my first OSX update. I am not able to get 10.10.4 installed on my MacBook. It fully downloads and starts to install; but the progress bar only moves to about an eight of an inch and stops. I have rebooted and it keeps doing the same thing. Is there a way to re-download the update to see if the one I have is corrupted. Is there any other way to fix this type issue? Thanks for any help you can provide. After 30 years on Windows, I am really enjoying finally having a Mac; but this has been a bit frustrating.

I have an issue too.

The new update won't install, it says that the data might have been corrupted during download, restart and try again. I did it 3 times already and it still says the same thing.
Everything else was installed except for the 1.09 GB download.

I am using a MacBook Air Mid 2012.

Try downloading the 10.10.4 Combo update from OS X support, like as not Apple`s servers are getting hammered for the auto update

Thanks for your reply. I was able to fully download the combo update last night. It stopped progressing in the install process. I was able to separately download the iTunes update; but the 10.10.4 still stops after about an eighth of an inch install progress.

I am using a new Retina MacBook; but my issue is certainly different from yours. I am assuming that my download was corrupted, since it isn't progressing. I have never had a Mac before; but have never had an issue like this with any of my iOS devices.

How long did you wait?
The progress bar may appear to stop at times.
You might see the install take longer than you might expect.
Start the install, and walk away for an hour or so. (give it time to finish :D )

Boot into Recovery (Cmd+R+Pwr) verify the drive and repair Permissions

What I do;
  • Clean up system, trash, logs, cache etc
  • Run all OS X maintenance scripts
  • Close all applications
  • Full shutdown of the Mac
  • Boot Mac, allow to start up fully
  • Apple OS X Combo
  • Let system settle after reboot & update, indexing etc
  • Check for further application updates
  • Reboot into Recovery verify drive & repair Permissions
  • Reboot, back to work
  • Validate primary Apps Mail, Office etc and or the ones you know may have issue after a major update
Never fails, updating my 4th Mac now

Thanks for the tips. I had done some of those. Since it is still working fine in 10.10.3 and I am going out of town tomorrow, I will wait on trying some of your tips till I get back.

Restart in Safe Boot mode, then try the combo install again.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
My reasoning is that Safe Boot mode will not let certain startup apps, well, startup. You may have some app that you have installed that is running in the background. Safe Boot mode may allow your install to complete without that interference.

Better to leave it be, if you have a stable system, and look at it when you have more time, as clearly there is an issue that requires to be resolved prior moving up to 10.10.4. Normally the updates are seamless even solely relying on Auto Update. I am just a little more cautious as I rely on my Macs for business.

Great idea! I will try it when I get home this afternoon. I have now learned how to get into Safe Mode now too. Thanks so much.

If you press [CMD] + [L] it shows the install log and you can watch to see if it gets stuck. Maybe not applicable in your precise situation because you had got further than that but it might help someone else that finds this thread.
