10.10.4 update to 10.10.5

Recently my late 2012 iMac was updated from 10.10.4 to 10.10.5 using updater but not the whole installer. I did not get the chance to save the whole installer. I have now tried to download the whole installer from App Store without success. My questions are:
(1) Any other way beside App Store to download the whole installer? If not,
(2) Do I need to revert back to 10.10.4 first and then do the whole update thing again using the whole installer ?

Your help is much appreciated!

The only legal way for you to get the whole installer is from the App Store. I'm confused what you are trying to accomplish now? Are you on 10.10.5 now?

Yes, I am on 10.10.5 now. I need to have a backup installer 10.10.5 on a USB stick. Currently the backup installer is 10.10.4.

I see. You should be able to just go to your purchases tab in the App Store app and redownload it. Otherwise, otherwise there is no legit way to get it.

There are no record of 10.10.5 been downloaded, but only 10.10.4. on my Purchases Tab. So I tried re-download it but it went back to 10.10.5 on the download page and again it re-download failed.

If you select the OS itself and not just an update, it will download the entire installer for 10.10.5. It should look like this in your purchases tab.

Yes, it does look just like that in the purchase tab. I selected the OS and went to the download page. But the download wheel just kept spinning. It looks like I have never downloaded the 10.10.5 full installer.

Hmm.... yeah that should download the full 10.10.5 installer. Maybe the App Store is on the fritz right now and you can try later.

No, I have tried since yesterday without success. On my download page, the file is marked "download" instead of "downloaded". That means I have never downloaded the full installer. My iMac was updated to 10.10.5 using update file not the full installer ( I don't recall how I did it but am pretty sure not from App Store) Are there other ways to update other than through App Store?

Your Mac did not come with Yosemite, so unless you torrented it or something, you had to have downloaded it from the App Store to install Yosemite.

I did all the updates/Upgrades from App Store (from Mountain Lion to Mavericks to Yosemite 10.10.4). Only the recent update from 10.10.4 to 10.10.5 was an exception that it was updated during one recent restart.

Okay then, you should have OS X Yosemite like in my screen shot in your purchases tab and it should say download to the right. Clicking that will get you the full 10.10.5 installer. If that will not download, you have something else wrong somewhere.

You should be able to do that now.
You can try the revert to 10.10.4 - but what do you do if the App Store still doesn't provide you with the download for 10.10.5?
Try a restart first (also restart your router), and try the download again.
Start it first thing in the morning when the 'net is often much less busy.

I guess I don't understand why you want to do this. I have an installer for the original Yosemite 10.10 and when an update comes out, I copy the Combo Updater to another USB stick that I keep most of my Updates on. This system works for me, but I guess we are not all the same.

And besides, next month El Cap will be officially released.

You should be able to download the full 10.10.5 from 10.10.5. Keep trying and it will eventually work.

That should not in any way affect how you could get the full 10.10.5 installer app.
And, you could download that on any Mac that can boot to Yosemite - if you have a different Mac available to do that.
For example, I have a mini here, booted to 10.8.5. I can download Yosemite installer, then Quit the installer app, copy the app itself to a backup drive. Then use that Yosemite installer to create a bootable USB installer on an 8GB flash drive.

Correct. I can download 10.10.5 without any problem, from 10.10.5. There's a prompt that I'm downloading a version of OS X I already have installed, but clicking continue results in the installer downloading without a problem.

The reason to revert to 10.10.4 is to do the update again from App Store using full installer. It would give me a chance to copy the installer before update. Right now the App Store would not let me download the full installer because the system is on 10.10.5. It would if 10.10.4. Does it make sense?

No, that does not make sense. You can download the 10.10.5 installer while running 10.10.5.

Finally, I downloaded the full installer by reverting to 10.10.4 and then updated to 10.10.5 from App Store. I think the whole thing is that the original update was not from App Store and I don't recall how I did it. All I remember was my iMac froze and was shut down improperly. When the machine restarted and close to completion, was asked if I want to update. That is what happened I believe. Thanks everyone for your help!
