10.10 updates SMC on at least one model

FYI - 10.10 will update the SMC on the MacBook Air 6,2 to version 2.13f12, which appears to be a beta version that is not listed on Apple's website (that I could find). I don't recall an OS X version going rogue and doing this on its own, but this 10.10 does.

After the first restart, the machine rebooted and on what looks similar to the standard 10.10. boot screen the fans spun up as at full speed (a good indication it is flashing) and then the machine rebooted after about 10 seconds. The progress bar was much higher on the screen during this. After this the boot screen looked different and it booted into the OS.

Not sure if it will do this on other models to but it is worth noting as this is something that cannot be undone (that I am aware of).

Do you have the black boot screen? I have a feeling that this SMC update has to do with the boot screen. On the macs with black boot screens, the screen is also black before the apple logo appears, and before any software loads.

My cMBP 2012 has a gray boot screen still and no SMC update (same one as on the apple website)

Yes - this machine does have the black boot screen. I agree that there is a setting that 10.10. flips to enable this, as it goes away if the PRAM is reset for one boot. Once 10.10 is booted one time it appears the next time.

I bet it is changing some boot-args in NVRAM that is perhaps undocumented.

There is also something interested with CoreStorage going on. Not sure if it is affecting all models, but it converts the entire drive to CoreStorage and Logical Volumes when 10.10. is installed.

I had a single volume - Macintosh HD when I partitioned the SSD in two and installed 10.10. from 10.9 onto the new partition. When it completed, everything was a CoreStorage volume.

I had the fans do the same thing on my 2013 iMac, it also has a black boot screen with 10.10.

Also I have downgraded my 2013 MBA to ML and my boot screen went back to grey but I never noted whether or not the SMC changed.

If you open the yosemite installation file and search into folders you could find that probably all 2013 models gets firmware update. You can downgrade from OS but not from firmware update..

Looks like my rMBP was updated to 2.19f9 with I installed Yosemite. That explains the extra restart during installation of the OS.

Does anybody have any news about this? After upgrading to Yosemite I'm experiencing the same black booting process as you. Moreover, I noticed that the startup manager, which we access by holding the option key, has the black background too. I didn't like the Yosemite, so I downgraded back to Mavericks, but I still have the startup manager with the black background and the initial screen during the startup sound is black too, and then the grey screen with the Apple logo comes up, which is typical for Mavericks. I want my startup manager to have grey background as before. And also, before there was grey screen during the startup sound, not the black one. Is there a way how to revert this? I'm experiencing all this on my rMBP, 13-inch, mid-2014.

It might be possible to flash the SMC firmware in order to downgrade but I would highly discourage it since you're more likely to brick your computer doing that. As to how to do so, I might recommend googling it.

Thanks for your advice. The strange thing is that my EFI Boot version is not even listed on the apple's website. The newest one listed is MBP111.0138.B03 (EFI 1.3), mine is B11 at the end.

Yeah, I know what you mean. A few threads online have mentioned this as well.

It's most likely because the EFI is Yosemite-exclusive and therefore the black screen (as you've mentioned before) would not look good on previous OS X versions. Since the older EFIs on apple's website had no design change (since 10.2 I believe), it was applicable for all OS X versions to download without it looking bad.
