Is it likely that Apple releases a 10.11.5 before 10.12?

Highly possible given that WWDC is around 2 months away with the release of OS X being at least 3 months after that so 5 months without some sort of update I don't see happening especially when you consider the widespread issue being talked about regarding videos playing and Mac's freezing.

I think more relevant question is will Apple release more updates to El Capitan than previous 4 OS X versions?

Assuming Apple doesn't change its schedule and 10.12 is released in late fall it would mean about 5-6 months with just one update and that would be unusually long time. I'm thinking we might see 10.11.6 released shortly before the time of 10.12 of release.

It now looks if there is going to be a 10.11.6, it'll be some time after the WWDC. August, maybe?

I really hope that they get those minor bugs cleaned up and do a bit more optimisation before 10.12.

If so we should see some 10.11.6 betas first. That would be an indication that they intend to release a 10.11.6.

On the other hand if they start releasing "security updates" for 10.11.5 that would indicate there would be no 10.11.6.

They could also release supplemental updates to 10.11.5 raising the build number without raising the version number.

And now we do have a 10.11.6 beta so we will probably see a public release of 10.11.6: https://www.macrumors.com/2016/05/23/apple-seeds-first-os-x-10-11-6-el-capitan-beta/

I say probably because although it is clear that that is the intention, nevertheless there have been betas before which were never released to the public, e.g., Mac OS 8.7

In that case that would mean 10.11.6 would become 10.12, like 8.7 became 9.0? That seems unlikely... We're still months away from the official 10.12 release, 10.11.6 will be released some time this summer I have no doubt about it.
