updated my macbook to 10.11.6 and it now gets hot.
It even cut out at work.

10.11.6 bad for me

If you have any valid backup before installing OS X 10.11.6 then you are ok. Otherwise, you are out of luck. There is no official way to revert back to previous minor version whatsoever.
I have a timemachine but about month old.
why not go back, windows can.

You can go back with Time Machine. Command-r boot to recovery and click restore then point to the Time Machine backup the source. Then you will get a screen similar to this. Scroll back and select the date/version you want to restore from.
The downside is any new data from that date to now will not be part of the restore.
I only have one backup.
and only one file that is important so i will back that up to usb then roll back via TM.

Windows system can go back if you don't mind losing all data or if you have a solid backup.
Why not make a backup of your current system and then revert back to the one month old one and then migrate the data you want that is new? I can choose between different time stamped backups just fine with Time Machine unlike on iOS ...
Ran TM and im up and running again.

using a compatible now, not so good but works.
Will reapply the updates one by one see which affects the machine.

It seems worse after the 10.11.6 update.
rolled back 10.11.5 but still warm.
Might get apple store redo thermal compound see if helps.

Reapplied the updates last night.
using compatible charger (waiting new GENUINE to arrived from ebay)
my local store wanted £65 for charger but refused to sell it to me unless I brought laptop in to be sure it right one.
So bought one on ebay for £29.99.
Machine warm but not hot at moment.
Machine has been running for and half days solid doing a file recovery that the windows machines at work where unable to do (yay for mac)
was plugged in with compat charger the whole time, all ok
So I'm back to 10.11.6, tempted try sierra as some say it less resource hungry.

I updated to 11.6 yesterday on my iMac. A couple hours later it would not wake up from display sleep and the case was VERY warm/hot. Finally got it to power on by holding down the switch. Then worked OK and today it seems normal. I have a Kill A Watt meter permanently attached to the iMac and the power draws associated with my sleep and usage modes now seem normal.
Someone mentioned the possibility that it was Spotlight indexing. Hopefully that is the case and there is no ongoing problem.

So, even after all the problems you had updating to 10.11.6, with a computer that you said that has important files, and complaining about the hot computer and all that stuff... And now you want to install a beta?

Actually your approach is fundamentally silly.
We will all wait for your "I installed a beta and now..." post. Best to take backups before you make a change if you don't make them regularly...

Apple does not let you undo updates.
I make regular TM backups before updates.
Currently have 8 on my external HDD.
So my approach is not silly as I have backups to protect myself.

I do think OSX should have a rollback option.
I mean if you update and it goes bad ur stuffed without backup.
How is that for a user friendly system.
I know apple will say that it's OS is stable and it is not needed.
