Is this still an issue? I've held off on updating because of reports of this breaking. I use two external monitors hooked to my Mac.

I think the 'breaking' is regarding eGPU's. Apple disabled TB1 & TB2 eGPU support. The eGPU support that they do provide is limited to AMD cards and a number of specific eGPU enclosures.
I believe that if you are using your internal GPU to drive an external monitor, you shouldn't experience any problems.
