If I install from System Preferences Software Update will the installer be in the Applications folder
and allow me to install at a later time if I wish ?

No. If you wish to do download now and update later, you need to download the update from Apples website.

If you are on Mojave, and fetch the installer from the App Store it will invoke System Preferences Software Update; if you download it from there, yes it will be in /Applications.
