Got 16 core 7,1 one of the first batch as it was ordered first hours. Installed 6 x 32GB (192Gb) of Crucial (Micron) RAM in December. Worked perfectly and passed quick tests for 10.15.1 and .2 (no I didn't do the whole memtest no time for that).

the 10.15.3 update did weird things (stalled, reboots). Because newer macs have no chime, and the XDR displays taking quite some time to react, it was all a very slow death.

Conclusion: tested thoroughly (even rolling back to 10.15.2 and changing ram back and forth, mixing rams, etc) and it only works with the original Apple RAM in 10.15.3

BTW the Apple supplied 6 x 6GB RAM is also Crucial / Micron

Are you certain you reset the NVRAM properly ? Try using an Apple brand wired USB keyboard and any brand wired laser mouse .

Hint : watch the mouse's red light go off and reappear while you are holding the PRAM keys . You might have missed the Apple logo disappearing thingy while looking at the keys you're pressing ;) . The Mac Pro 7,1 will only restart just once when you've completed the reset operation .

Do you have pictures of the third party memory modules you installed that you suspect are causing System issues ?

after NVRAM reset you can turn on the startupsound in terminal:

sudo nvram StartupMute=%00

I keep forgetting to do that !!!

UPDATE

I just tried this on my MP7,1 and the chime worked , until I reset the NVRAM .

Then my Mac went back to being mute at start up .

Do you just open up the terminal and type this in?
Do you save it somewhere? How does it remember to keep the code going?

Update 1: Tried it... didn't work.

if the NVRAM is reset, the function is of course no longer available, because it was in the deleted NVRAM part

works on all T2 equipped computers when it is entered into the terminal.
if the loudspeaker output is set to zero (or too quiet), you will not hear anything.
after a NVRAM reset it is of course gone again.

Well good news, it works! I'm a bit ashamed that a PC USB keyboard + nvram solved it, as I have a lot of experience and should have ocurred to me. Sorry about the delay, it's a work machine located in the office.

Anyway did quick testing, did HWTest, restarted in Recovery, set startup disk again as NVRAM de-selects it, all working perfeclty now. Than you very much!

her'es the picture of both modules, of course gray being Apple's supplied, with the chips enlarged.

you did not see the difference?

first is a 1R8 and second a 2R4

but if it works, ok
hope also when it is fully used

I never mixed different types. I just bough 192GB of new crucial RAM and didn't use Apple's. Then after 10.15.3 it didn't boot with only the new RAM. it's solved now.

By the Way accordint to Apple's website document, you can mix 32Gb and lesser capacity (thus different rank right?) if you put 32Gb first. Read it here how to install R-DIMMs of mixed capacities

Glad its working out for you and thanks for the close ups .

Always , reset NVRAM when a hardware change has been made to your Mac .

Reseting the SMC ( aka reset the logic board ) might also help things .

THANK YEWthumbsup.gif Really missed the chime. I've been hearing of some sort of chime since my first Mac Plus. This one's a lower in verberato, but a welcome addition. Thanks again.

I've got 64GB of Samsung memory along with the 32GB of Apple memory on mine, no issues at all. working great...
