I have been hearing a lot about 10.2 and some of its new features... but not really anything about the system preformace tweaks. Will be dramaticly faster than 10.1.

Anyone got the scope?

OS X 10.2

Here is what I know about OS X 10.2
Code named Jaguar
Full support for the G5
Spring-loaded folders (you know, the Classic old times)
As of 3/3/2002 entered beta 15

However, according to old rumors about people who tried to download the update the file size was over a half a gigabyte. Just as in 10.1 there may be a CD upgrade for 10.2 since some of us (especially me) would take forever trying to download the file under 28.8K dial-up.
_______________

If you want to wait forever on something, try extracting an mp3 CD album to standard format on a PeeCee. Or wait in line at JFK International for a security check for four hours.

why do u have an 28.8k connection?
Computers for the last 4 years all came with 56k modems, so how are you connecting so slow?

I can bet it will have some speed improvements and will have very large update to Quartz.

Does anybody know if 10.2 will have a Cocoa based Finder and if Cocoa programs are any faster that Carbon ones. I haven't noticed a difference.

On some computers, the firmware for the V.90 function of 56K cannot handle the constant flow of traffic at high speed. When I try to do so I get connection problems, which show that. So I use V.34, which gives me completely stable, but slower, conncetions.

If it's over half a gig, there's no way they'll release it as a download! Sounds like another $19.99 upgrade-or-download-the-disk-image-from-your-friend. Sigh... such a dilemma! ;)

King Cobra: quit pretending you know anything for sure. you are acting like you have some sort of inside info. u are guessing just like the rest of us.

10.2 was originally planned to be released at MWSF 2002 (according to thinksecret). apple decided that people were not ready to pay for another upgrade and decided to continue development (again according to thinksecret).

betas of 10.2 have been circulating that clearly show a preference panel that has a springloaded folders option, however this function does not seem to work in anyy builds i have gotten my hands on.

other minor features seem to be present.

no betas to date have had a cocoa finder.

no betas to date have had improved quartz functions.

this doesnt mean it wont happen though. the betas leaked to the public are always way behind what is happening in cupertino.

since day one of mac os 10 people have wanted a cocoa finder. people believe that apple wanted to make it carbon to show developers that carbon works well.

every cocoa app i have ever used has been better/faster than carbon apps that have similiar function. i do not know if this is a result of it being cocoa or not though. since a cocoa app must be written from the ground up while most carbon apps are simply ports of classic apps perhaps we are losing speed there. this is not the case with the finder however, which was written from the ground up (i am assuming). still i would like to see apple use cocoa in all of their apps. but i think the consensus reached in other discussions is that changing the finder to a cocoa app would be such a major under taking that it is not likely to happen any time soon.

as far as speed goes, I have not noticed any speed gains over 10.1, however, every 10.2 i have installed has been so buggy it is barely useable so perhaps the speed was hiding. i have not heard of anyone else who has installed 10.2 finding it any bit faster, but i have not spoken to many people about it.

Right now, my father will not let me use DSL or anything like that. My family is trying to purchase a second house in Maine at around $140000 and they took out a second mortgage. The only reason that my Dad gets DSL is because he needs it for where he works. Right now, we are on a tight budget, so we really can't afford anything faster than dial-up.

king cobra: are you for real kid? what are you like 12 13 years old? no that cant be because there are a number of people here that young who dont act so immature. did you just miss my entire point? you were passing off information you had gleaned from these threads as facts. you were lying to people are pretending you had some inside info. you did say, "from what ive collected off the forums..." or "my predictions are..." you said "here is what i KNOW" you dont know anything beyond what people here have told you. its ok to reiterate what people here have said but be up front about it. especially because when you pretend to have insider information and people can already pull out things you claim are true are false, then you look like a jerk. im not attacking you kid (btw im not calling you kid because you are young, i even call my parents kid) im just saying dont try to sound like you know more than you do. be upfront with us. most of us dont have a clue either so we wont hold it against you.

What is wrong with you. No one but YOU even cares about his grammer usage. He was corect in saying, "this is what I know." If he said, "this is what I know because I have the inside info based upon my connections to powerful people that work within Apple," then perhaps you would have a right to make a SMALL complaint. Otherwise, you are just making yourself out to be a jerk....oh, I get it. You are a loser with no life whose only pleasure in life is the Macrumors forum. well, in that case, don't let us get in your way.

Hey AmbitiousLemon:

Why is it sooo important to you to bash a, what did you call him, 12 year old? If you know he's just a kid then let him be a kid -- this is why I hate Rumors sections -- everyone bashes everyone but forgets to look in the mirror. I particularly love how you say, "quit pretending you know anything," but then admit that you only glean all of your information from thinksecret as if YOU are the real source. Thanks for the humor, you kill me.

Do us all a favor and go eat another bowl of Coco-Puffs. I'm sure that many of us are older than you "kid" (including me) but who the hell cares (most of my young employees can code the crap out of me and I have no problem admitting it).

LOL

Come on guys, take it easy, please... Aren't we all Mac users, searching for better ways to use our "Apples", searching for knowledge, for staying up to date, concerned with our future and with the future of Macintosh???? Is it really important to show of??? Trying to stand higher than others?? Come on guys we are here for the same reason... in research for knowledge, in research for the sufficient knowledge to try to predict, what will be tomorow... Just my two cents...

for the record...

I don't know anything concrete whatsoever regarding 10.2....except for what I saw in those Jaguar movies that were up here a couple months ago...

I can only imagine it'll bring some minor things up to date and hopefully some speed improvements....

for those of u who have gotten copies and installed it....how do u rate it?

and I apologize for my laziness in asking rather than just searching it out....if it's in this forum....there is simply too much quoting paragraphs upon paragraphs of what each other has said....it's just too much to try and translate! ;)

Leave him alone already.

Quit lambasting King Cobra!!!

He didn't say anything too bad on this thread. I've seen far worse posted on this site without people attacking the posters. The only thing you'll accomplish by berating him is to scare him away--I don't think that makes for a very friendly community.

And don't hold his first post against him. Everyone should get a second chance.

Matthew

Hopefully...

Hopefully, Apple is taking the time to fix some architectural issues that had to be worked around to get OS X out the door the first time around.

Basically, prepare to throw one away (ala Frederick Brooks, et al).

Version 1.0 of any software is going to have some issues. Issues that you don't necessarily see as issues when you start building version 1, but which become very apparent while building version 1. Nothing like a little perspective to reveal a more elegant solution.

Hopefully, Apple is taking the time to address these changes now and not just working on window dressing. The more solid the foundation, the better off we'll all be with OS X in the future. Unfortunately, they'll probably have to rip out a few floors and such to get everything the way they want it. But, they seem to be taking the time to put them back. :)

Expect 10.2 to be really solid by the time it hits 10.2.1.

Actually..

Actually, I'm a PC user who wants to be a mac user. I started here looking for information, and now use this as a source to help me plan the timing of my next computer purchase. I don't want to make the mistake a bunch of people did when they bought G3 towers right before the G4 came out.

As for Ambitious Lemon, he bashed me because I had the audacity to suggest that Apple might want to consider methods to increase its market share. He basically said I was an idiot and should keep my mouth shut because I was just saying what had been said on these threads before.

He takes this stuff very seriously, but if you can get past his attitute, he really does know a lot, and I have learned quite a bit from reading his posts. That being said, Ambitious Lemon, you really ought to relax a bit. That can't be good on your blood pressure.

wow ive never been flamed before...

hm, i had a big long response to all the people who had so rudely attacked me, but decided not to post it. i can see all of the people who had a problem with what i said, either didnt read what i said, resorted to childish name calling, or didnt understand what i said.

if you want to call me childish names send me a private message dont fill the boards with that stuff. but ill say this, if you people think i had a problem, maybe you should read your own posts and see just how stupid and childish you sound.

ill put it simple for the people in the last category (the rest arent worth replying to). cobra was showing off. he was pretending to know things he didnt. he flat out lied. he clearly WASNT making predictions, but was pretending to know these things for sure. i know this because ive read the things he took his info from (we all have havent we?). and i know he lied because ive used a number of builds of 10.2.

but i might have over reacted with my second post. mostly i was responding to ALL of cobra's posts, and that might have been inapproriate. had others not see all of cobra's posts i can understand why they would think i was making a big deal out of nothing.

all i can say is, im sorry if i overreaacted. but i still feel that when someone on these boards acts in a childish fashion (no matter how old they are) people need to let them know so that they stop.

that being said, lets get back on topic here.

macuser: im still dying to know what that screenshot was of. care to explain? although weve all seen lots of the pictures before, id like to see what build you are using and if some of the new features are working yet. i havent played with 10.2 in a long time, id be interested to know what progress has been made.

eyelikeart: my impressions so far is that apple is trying to flesh out osx. they seem to be adding features. most didnt work with the builds i have installed so i couldnt really get to know it well. its hard to rate since it really wasnt functional yet, but if everything apple was trying to do makes it to GM then i think we have an update bigger than 10->10.1.

I agree with oldmac that they are probably focusing a lot of attention on whats under the hood. i would guess this is why the beta's were so buggy, playing with that kind of stuff tends to create buggy betas. (my crash logs alone amounted to several megabytes, by the time i stuffed them and snet them off).

Some people have asked about cocoa finder's (lot of history there) and better quartz performance. if its in the works i havent seen anything. does anyone else know anything about improvements quartz(this would be great, and just the kind of thing apple woudl surprise us with)?

apple tends to follow muliple lines of builds (just my experience from following various builds both officially and 'unofficially')when going through development and all the betas ive seen have been from one lineage so who knows what is happening along the other lines.

Let me get this straight: you attack a guy and basically call him an idiot, a liar, and a kid, not to mention imature, but then say that we were "rude" in attacking YOU. And then you suggest that we should re-read our own posts?? Once again, I suggest you re-read your own comments to others.

if you want to call me childish names send me a private message dont fill the boards with that stuff. but ill say this, if you people think i had a problem, maybe you should read your own posts and see just how stupid and childish you sound.

Oh I see, so it's ok for you to lambast others but if someone "flames" you (as you put it) then it should be done in private. Geez, you sound like a politician -- always complaining that others are resorting to "dirty politics" while you have fists full of mud (in case you don't get it, it's a reference to your mud slingin'). [/B][/QUOTE]

Who cares if he was showing off? Almost everyone in these forums do it. {GadgetLover presently juggles three flaming balls while riding a uni-cycle on a 3mm wire while balancing over a ten story building -- not!} The guy driving down the street in a new Porche 911 Turbo is doing it (but I bet you'd still love to have his car -- I know I would).

but i might have over reacted with my second post. mostly i was responding to ALL of cobra's posts, and that might have been inapproriate. had others not see all of cobra's posts i can understand why they would think i was making a big deal out of nothing.

I don't disagree with you on this point; however, since you still jumped on him from the get-go over nothing material (who cares if he boasts a bit -- I betcha my mac is bigger than yours :) it's kinda irrelevant. Believe me, if you punched someone in front of a Police Officer but told the officer that the guy you hit had once hit you ten years ago, do you think they'd let you off just because other stuff had happened back stage?

all i can say is, im sorry if i overreaacted. but i still feel that when someone on these boards acts in a childish fashion (no matter how old they are) people need to let them know so that they stop.

I agree. Read that last sentence and then look in the mirror and smile. All will then be forgiven.

... but just in case you decide to throw one of those "maybe YOU should look in the mirror" wise-cracks back at me, I'll just remind you of a few of your comments to others in the last two days in this thread alone ....

King Cobra: quit pretending you know anything. you are acting like you have some sort of inside info, when clearly you have just been reading these threads (and not apparently understanding much).

Oh, and then there was:

king cobra: are you for real kid? what are you like 12 13 years old? no that cant be because there are a number of people here that young who dont act so immature.

Anyway, the point is we ALL have from time to time done the aforementioned, so don't act so superior. I admit it for myself and you should too -- NONE of us are Mother Theresa's in here (except maybe Ed, right Ed?)

Alex too!

Yeah, you too. There are TWO Saints that visit these forums.

Everyone else is called .... umm... oh yeah, HUMAN!

hi, I started this thread.

hi, I started this thread.

Okay, all you guys' replies were swell... but does anyone here know anything new about system spead enchacements in OS 10.2.

Sometimes forum threads are lacking in acutal information. (lots of bitching though.... )
