10.3.1 update nows asks to enable dictation?

I updated to 10.3.1 today on my iPhone 7 plus.

If I try to dictate a search in Safari, dictate a text, or do anything by voice, I get a pop up asking me to enable dictation. What changed?

It says dictation sends information to Apple. Is this just another user agreement, or is this something new?

I am really getting tired of these constant updates that do very little but change things and add unnecessary steps to something that was working fine before. I usually update for the latest security, but you never know what else has changed.

How are you trying to use dictation without it being enabled?

In the past when I clicked on the little microphone on the keyboard it would beep, I would say what I wanted, and it would dictate a message, a search phrase into the search bar of a browser, etc. Now it comes up with the stupid message and I have to accept the terms before I can use dictate.

Have you checked in settings to see if dictation is enabled?

This is nothing new. It's just terms that you have to agree to again after updating. Dictation relies on an internet connection as it uses apple's servers to properly dictate. This is something they are trying to do away with and make dictation and many Siri inquiries local on your device without needing a connection to the internet. However, until then you'll have to accept the terms in order to use it. It's something that you had already agreed to in the past, but updating may have turned it off requiring you to re-agree.

It sounds like perhaps dictation might have gotten disabled for some reason and as part of enabling it again that information was triggered (as it typically shows up when you want to enable dictation). As for updates, they address various things like security issues and other bugs, not necessarily everything that everyone notices necessarily, but some people do, and in case of security fixes it's about closing those off so there wouldn't really be much to notice.

I agree. That is why I always do the updates. What I don't like is the surprises that comes along with it. They keep changing things that don't need to be changed. I'm all for innovation and new features but moving things around and calling it an update is annoying.

I've certainly had a setting or two change once in a while after an update, but it's not something that happens often. I generally check on various settings after an update in any case just to double-check things as when it comes to computers and updates in general there's always a chance of something happening somewhere.

I feel you. I for one welcome many of the changes and have come to adapt. However, my father is of your thinking. He can't even stand changing his wallpaper.
