10.4.9 update + video problems: is repair permissions necessary?

I upgraded to 10.4.9 and immediately had video playback repercussions. When I open video files (.avi for example) in VLC or any other player they play back choppy. Those same files were fine before the OS update.
Is repair permissions the best solution?
Anyone else having this problem?

It wouldn't hurt to try to repair permissions. Also download and use Onyx. Use Onyx before and after each update. Some users report that it fixes problems and speeds up Mac OS X.

Anyway, have you verified your disk? Or checked your CPU use while playing a video? And did you run everything in Onyx?
