10.5.2 and Leopard Graphics Update Thoughts

I've downloaded both 10.5.2 now and Leopard Graphics Update. Don't forget to do software update check again after the 10.5.2 update for the Leopard Graphics Update.

Post your thoughts here MBA users. Is your battery lasting longer, are your CPU temperatures lower and fan speeds lower during a HD movie or any extended movie clip. This is especially important since the Leopard Graphics update SHOULD help significantly us MBA users in the HD and Standard movie department.

I don't have any thoughts yet, but I have everything written down from all the stuff I've been doing along with their temperature records and fan records. I'll be checking soon to see if I get better processing and lower temps during HD movie playback.

Just from playing a HD film clip for 5 minutes I can tell you already there is an improvement. I'll get exact differences pre-update and post update up soon.

No more choppy graphics for my (x1600 256MB, iMac Core Duo).

It wasn't that bad before the graphics update, but I missed the nice smooth animations in Tiger - but now I have them again

Make sure spotlight is finished indexing.

My tests may not be reliable because when I ran the pre video driver xbench test I think spotlight was indexing.

1.6/80hdd. Before the update set at max performance I got 103 on quartz and 15.5 on open GL for xbench.

After the video driver update I get 99 on quartz and 16.36 on open GL.

Only four hours left for me. Most pathetic "high speed" internet connection ever. I guess this is what we pay thousands of dollars a year for to live in university housing.

update does not fix MBA fan issues

I just updated to 10.5.2 and I can report that those of you with fans running near 6200 RPM will not be fixed.

I have one of the goofy MBA's with battery problems.

I held off using the MBA until 10.5.2 since Apple's horrific quality is just getting depressing at this point.

Anyway, after 10.5.2, I saw my charge time drop to 2:45 from 9+ hours. I was pleased beyond words.

Then, about 20 minutes later, it was back to 7+ to charge.

Now, it's about 2 hours (battery is at 23%)

I have conditioned the battery once and done a SMC reset, so I am not optimistic. But I will do another full conditioning cycle and SMC reset and hopefully the third time will be the charm.

Other than that, 10.5.2 is looking to be a much needed update across the board.

Full charge capacity (mAh): 5039

this is after 12 charge cycles. normally i'd see no more than 4970 for remaining charge.

I don't think that fan issues or battery issues would generally get fixed with an OS Update, those are usually in SMC Firmware updates, like the one that fixed my Macbook moo back in the day. I am sure those will come. If you can't wait (and I wouldn't with my fan at 6000 rpm all the time), I would suggest taking it back. That is the price Apple pays for the delay they have in fixing such issues. Still, I wouldn't call it Apple's horrific quality, they have one of the best ratings for quality, etc. in the industry. If you've had bad luck, that's unfortunate I've had a few bad experiences myself, though I have never had trouble getting service (got my iPod replaced after the hard drive died, 2 weeks before the warranty expired, and I got my iPhone replaced when it had those funky white polka dots). I would say, you should remember you bought a Rev. A product. It's going to have hiccups, and while it is statistically unlikely for anyone to have a number of bad units, it's statistically probable that someone will. It really sucks when it's you, I know.

Here's hoping you guys get your firmware updates sooner than we MooBook owners got ours .

Mine was losing the airport card when it returned from Sleep mode. That seems fixed in 10.5.2....(so far...)

Alright HD movies are running at an average across the board about 7 degrees celsius cooler compared to pre video update, fans in turn not speeding up as quickly. Liking it a whole lot!

Same here! just checked. Not going to say its because of the update, because it's been known to jump around. Though 2 percent upward does seem like it could be update induced.

ran a quick torture test regarding the two biggest issues i mentioned in the first impressions thread: spotty 802.11n performance (for the record in mixed b/g/n mode) and ambient light sensor problems. beyond a reasonable doubt, these issues have been fixed.

for testing 802.11n, i streamed a 1080p movie and a 720p movie, both .mkv, as well as a 640x480 divx file, through mplayer. osx becomes unstable if i try to stream any file without prebuffering. with a 2mb prebuffer, i can watch up to 720p no delay or syncing issues -- at 1080p there's a significant amount of lag between the video and audio streams no matter the prebuffer size. nonetheless, the connectivity issues i've been having at home have been fixed. big thumbs up to apple. another plus is playing these files no longer results in having the fan spin at 6200rpm within 5 minutes.

and as someone else mentioned in another thread, backlit keyboard behavior now behaves as it should.

one minor detail i noticed was that on ac power the led backlight will remain lit for about 10-15 minutes before dimming. that's pretty much all i think of at the moment.

That UI test must be BS in between OS X.y.* versions. You got a 104 in 10.5.1, and a 149 in 10.5.2? that's either amazing or meaningless, and I would guess the latter, as you are seeing pretty much identical scores in the other graphical tests (most of them worse, actually).

I can't say that I see a huge difference post-install... HD movies are running cooler, but I also wasn't having any fan/heat/cpu/skipping issues in the first place..

Overall, the CPU does seem to be running 4-5 degree's C cooler today than yesterady... I'm cruising along at 45-46...
