Hey folks, Apple just tossed some refurb 10.5" iPad pros up on the store for $379 for 64gb. I'm looking to replace my 3rd gen Air that died last year - use case is pretty basic, media consumption, note taking (with the Apple Pencil 1 and keyboard folio I already own), and recipes. On the one hand, this is cheaper than all but the basic current iPad, and buying a new-gun would require new pencil and keyboard, but on the other it's almost $400 for 4-year old technology. Thoughts on how much longer the A10X will be useful? Thanks!

Difficult to say. Apple is still keeping the Air 2 with its A8X in the loop for iPadOS updates. I have a feeling that one may get the cut this year though.

I’m going to take a guess here : 3 years of useful life left.

If you're ready to gamble with 10.5's display white spot issue, then you can try. I liked it's size tho and design as well, but mine had white spot so it was replaced by Apple under warranty and then sold immediately by me.

I would rather wait a bit if you can and see whether spring ipad Air that's been rumored knocks down prices of some other ipad models.
If you can't, then my pick would be regular ipad 9 to go with your pencil.

Why would it stop being useful if it doesn't get updates?

The screen has already been mentioned but let's not forget that the 2018 11" iPad Pro has USB-C which might be of interest, plus a much more advanced CPU.

The older iPad Airs aren't a great deal and the 10.5" models are also mentioned in the same notes as the Pro where the 'white spot' issues are concerned.

A regular iPad 9 with a more modern CPU might be a better pick at this point if your budget can't stretch as far as the 11" Pro and you don't mind the lesser screen. As mentioned, you can re-use your Pencil with it.
