10.6.8>10.8.3 WITH a SSD/HDD combo as the boot

Wanting to upgrade the ati Gfx card with the mac edition gtx 680 for CS5.
Have apps on a ssd and the home directory on a 1tb HDD.

Do I just (after cloning everything!) go to the App Store, buy 10.8, combo update if required, install / update etc...hey presto, I have 10.8.3 OR, do I do it differently is using a sdd/HDD split?

Osx on the ssd
Home directory linked to the internal 1tb hdd

Your home directory would be better off on the SSD but with /Music, /Pictures, /Movies, and /Downloads placed on the HDD.

/Library, /Sites, /Documents, and usually /Desktop too is where a lot of small-file I/O occurs so best to have them on the SSD me thinks.

As far as an upgrade overwriting your links or not it may depend on how you perform the upgrade. Assume an overwrite so that you remain safe. Typically you have to relink after an update.

To answer my own question - I downloaded 10.8, created a USB thumb, backed up all my internal HDDS - RAID, Home, Boot SSD, Green WD and Windows 7 Partition - the updated... all the same as before - quite happy with 10.8.3 - weird look to text (bolder), faster window loading, er.... ummm messages... um er and thats about it..

at least can now have a gtx680 inside - oh and mac the ripper no longer works ! oh well, apple did say optical media was dead right... ?

There is an option in System Preferences under Users to move your 'Home' folder to another location.
SSD owners like to do this because it reduces the number of writes to the drive. And because the Home folder is normally where all the large personal files get stashed like video and pictures.

So, your OS X startup drive is the SSD. And the just the Home folder is copied and pasted to the HDD.

On a related matter, when you purchased 10.8 from app store does it download a file to your HDD to install from, or after processing auto install?
Only reason I ask, my internet is very slow and it will take about 16 hours to download (can you start/stop the download). I wish there was a disc option
