10.6 Print Problems

Yesterday I bought a new 21.5" iMac from the Apple Store in Regent Street. It won't print.
This morning I gave up and called Apple Care. I spent 2 hours and 10 minutes on the phone with them without any solution. The guy admitted he was completely baffled. I still cannot print from the iMac.
I have a Konica Minolta Magicolor 2450 and a Toshiba e-Studio 16s networked in my office through AirPort Extreme. I have no problems printing wirelessly to these printers using my MacBook Pro on 10.5.8 and my MacBook on 10.5.8.
I copied my data and the settings from the MacBook to the iMac using Migration Assistant. The PPDs were not copied across.
I downloaded new PPDs from Konica and Toshiba and installed them.
The iMac will not see either of the printers which are on an AppleTalk Local Zone. The Add Printer option on the 10.6 iMac has "Default | Fax | IP | Windows" while on the 10.5 MacBook Pro I have "Default | Fax | IP | Windows | Bluetooth | AppleTalk | More Printers" and the two wirelessly networked printers appear under the AppleTalk window.
I connected each printer directly to the iMac using an ethernet cable. It still wouldn't see them.
What am I doing wrong?
We figured out a convoluted workaround. By checking Sharing Printers on the iMac, MacBook and MacBook Pro, I can finally see the printers, but this means I must have at least two computers running in order to print. Not a satisfactory solution.

AppleTalk? Are you sure? I thought AppleTalk lost official support years ago.

Can the printers use standard IP? This is what you want.

Snow Leopard does not support AppleTalk, it was dropped when SL was released. However you should be able to connect using the IP address of the printer. Here is what you need to do:

1. Locate the IP address of the printer. Each printer is different so you will need to refer to the printer's manuals to locate this information.
2. System Preferences-Print & Fax
3. Click the + button at the bottom of the Printers list.
4. Click the IP icon in the resulting Add a Printer window.
5. In the address field add the IP address you previously found.
6. The printer's name should appear at this point. Click the Add button.


NOTE: Do not turn off the printers, if you do it probably will change it's IP address.

If the printers don't have a fixed IP address, then perhaps they are Bonjour compatible and this should be used.

If I recall correctly, it was some eight years ago when Apple said "Do not use AppleTalk for future applications", so there was plenty of warning.

Many thanks for your help. I tried the IP address route and haven't had any luck yet.
The Apple Store replaced yesterday's iMac today (graphics card failure) so I'm now using Migration Assistant to transfer data to the new iMac.
Then I'll try your suggestions again and report back.

After finding the IP addresses for the printers it was, as you predicted, fairly straightforward.
The IP addresses were not in the printer manuals as you suggested, however. They were eventually revealed on the Menu display panels on the printers after a lot of (random) button pushing.
Once input, the iMac printed instantly. So I'm very grateful for your advice.
I don't understand why Apple Support could spend two hours on the phone with me and not come up with this solution. I also don't understand why, despite installing the relevant printer drivers in the Library, they don't show up on the driver menu and we're using the Generic PostScript Printer drivers —*until I solve this.
Still, it now works. Thank you.

I have exactly the same problem wit my hp p1005, but i dont know how to locate this, why did apple drop appletalk!! printing went fine until 10.6 was here. I have my P1005 connected to my airport express, how do i locate the ip adress?

Espon NX420 adding problems

Ive owned my iMac for a week, great stuff. Did some research here and on apple site for a compatible printer with the iMac and bought the Epson NX420 today. The network recognizes it, Wifi light is on.

When I add the printer, it list my printer on the "add printer" screen...it spins and then about the time I start to click the add button (always grayed out) the printer name disappears.

I have reinstalled the drivers 3 different times, with the same result. The printer name is there just for about a minute then disappears and cannot be found when you start the process over.

I have read through the printer quick guide and when googled for the solution this site was at the top of the list.

Any ideas are appreciated.
