We got a mac mini server 10.7 before the summer hols and currently it runs 30 iMacs, however I can't seem to get external hard drives or memory sticks to work no matter what policies I set.

I tried managing them and setting everything in media and hard discs as allowed, and it doesn't mount or show the devices. However I can see them via hardware overview.

I tried not managing them, and again they don't work but I can see them via hardware overview.

I have checked the finder preferences and made sure they are set up to be viewed, but with no joy.

Can anyone help or give me some other suggestions? as payment I can offer several large chunks of hair, recently tore off a technicians head...

Whats the file format?

Macs on 10.7 and up can not shiar exfat and fat32 partitions,

It was never like this in osx 10.6 and this problem remains in osx 10.8

If you can downgrade to a real OS osx 10.6.8server its a true server system

I am not trying to share via servering though, we are managing with 10.7, and trying to plug memory sticks (the pupils own) or external hard drives owned by the school and previously used on the 10.6 machines these replaced, into individual machines. And it doesn't mount or let you use the device despite being able to see it in the bios/disk utility.

Dvds and cds will mount on the disc top and work as usually. However memory sticks/external drives will not.

then in you server management for the users there should be a setting for the user profile aka restictions kind of like, check in there, if it wont mount on the Clinet.

Your never said anything about the client users. Also have you gone to see if they show in finer? because there is a setting that will make it not show on the desktop but fine in the finder window
