I recently updated my Mid-2009 15" Macbook Pro to 10.8.3 from 10.8.2 and have been having huge problems since then.

Since the update, my computer will freeze when you wake it from sleep. I will get the spinning beach ball and it will never "un-freeze." I have to do a hard reboot.

When I do the hard reboot, I get the Apple logo with the spinning gear at the bottom but then the Apple logo turns into a logo that is a a circle with a line through it like there is no hard drive or OS installed.

I am forced to go into recovery console and do a repair disk and repair disk permissions. When doing these steps, Disk Utility finds no errors at all. After rebooting from the recovery console, my computer boots as normal and is able to be used.

Problem is, I have to go through the whole cycle again when I wake the computer from sleep again. I've called into Apple support and they say to reinstall the OS but I really don't want to do that. I know everything was working perfectly fine before this update and was trying to see if anyone else is having the same issue.

Thanks in advance for the help or any advice that you can give.

Well the freezing continues to happen so I finally decided to re-install OSX from the recovery console.

After the download and install the computer rebooted and was stuck on the Apple logo with the spinning gear for over 30 minutes before I finally did a force shutdown again.

This is the same thing that happened after I updated from 10.8.2 to 10.8.3 and read on the forums that other people had to do a force shutdown after updating to 10.8.3 also.

I know it's definitely something related to 10.8.3 as I have never had any boot or freezing problems prior to this update. Problem is, there doesn't seem to be a way to roll back to 10.8.2 since the reinstall just re-downloads Mountain Lion with 10.8.3.

I had a similar problem with 10.8.2. I had put in a brand new blank ssd and installed 10.8.2 from a external hard disk. At some point, OS X asked me if I wanted to transition files from and old install to the new install. I had the old internal hard drive connected via sata to usb and clicked okay. I then realized you had no option what to migrate and it started to migrate everything. I cancelled the process, but some of the files must have made it over. Almost every day, I would get a frozen screen after waking up my notebook from sleep and always the wifi wouldn't connect. Less than 2 weeks later, the ssd could not be detected.

I now have a new SSD and clean installed 10.8.2 without migrating any settings. I then updated to 10.8.3 through the app store and so far, I'm not getting any connection or sleep problems and my mac is way faster. For me, it seems like migration causes the problems.

If nothing else works, it's the last resort option to do a complete clean install. Here's a video that shows you how.

http://youtu.be/lCnkAJUL8eA

I've used this method in the past, and I've had no problems. It means several hours of re-installing everything. Before you re-install, you can make a list of all the software you need to reinstall -- download the latest versions -- and then it's fairly straightforward. Make sure you backup everything, including Apple Mail folder and Mail preference file etc.

I have been having a similar issue lately. On wake my 2011 MBA is frozen, no beachball though. Just frozen on the login screen. It seems to only happen if its been sleeping for over a few hours (I have hibernate disabled).

I'm on 10.8.3, and I have filevault enabled. This has been happening since I updated to 10.8.3, but it seems to be happening more frequently recently.

Has anyone found a reliable solution yet? I would rather not do a total reinstall but I will if thats what it comes down to.

Freeze on wakeup

I am seeing this on my Macbook also, it only happens when I leave it plugged in overnight (6-8 hrs).

It does wakeup eventually, just really slow at it.

Are you sure that it is truly frozen? What happens if you let it bee for 2 minutes?

Glad you asked.

I just came back to it after having lunch with a friend. It slept for ~2 hours. More than an hour but surely less than three. It was frozen when I got back. No curser, no keyboard reaction, nothing. Just frozen on the login screen.

I was angry and decided to get a cup of tea for a few minutes. I was gone for ~3 minutes and came back to it, it was still frozen. I did a hard reboot.

This has become extremely irritating.

Considering how much of a pain in the ass doing a full wipe and reinstall would be, I am considering making it slightly more of a pain in the ass and downgrading to 10.8.2. I figure I can find the MAS version of 10.8.0 or something on bittorrent, download and install that, and then find a site that caches updates (I know of a few) and find a update to 10.8.2.

I think it's fixed finally. I ended up deleting /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist in order to reset all the pmset stuff I have been messing with back to default. So far so good, it's been a few days with several 4+hr sleeps and no freezes.

I had the same issue. I reinstalled many times (Clean), but the problem still exist, I have monitored this for several days and I noticed that it only happens when i have a browser open and playing flash videos, i even experienced freeze while playing flv. file using quicktime x(with Perian). All the solutions i find across the internet have failed, it's so frustrating. although i find a simple solution or temporary fix just not use a hard reboot (Holding power button) ..
I just close the lid when freeze happens for some seconds and open again this works for me. i hope this help.

It sucks but I've gone through everything you've mentioned. I've search the internet high and low and there seems to be no single cause (but some good suggestions that it has something to do with the graphics drivers).

Here's how I've been able to address it so far, and this is after trying all of the usual Apple voodoo on my MBP.

***And as a twist, Monition Lion was/is installed on a separate partition. I'd strongly suggest anyone reading this do the same. 10.6.8 installed on one and ML on another, keeping back ups of both. ***

1. Using the 10.8.3 installer, restore the dmg file to a thumb drive.
2. Create a ML partition, around 100GB should do fine.
3. Install from thumb drive onto the ML partition
4. If it installs, reboots and hangs on gray Apple logo (post spinning gear)....Wait.
5. If it appears to do nothing........wait some more. No kidding, It took 20 minutes before I saw a mouse "pointer"

6. Slowly items will appear (log on/welcome info etc). If you get a spinning beach ball when you get the "Start using your mac" message..... close the lid and allow the MBP to sleep for a min, should resume okay.

7. Once you get a working copy make a back up using CCC. This will be your working restore drive if something goes crazy again.

I have some more interesting and helpful troubleshooting links on this issue I'll post later.

Just thought I'd add what helped me.

.................. this happens just when I was warming up to Mountain Lion:rolleyes:

Looks like most of this is on purpose from Apple to comply with European regulations. It is designed to be a deep sleep with OS X 10.8.2 update 2. They talk about it in the support forums on Apple's site. You should not have to do a a hard reboot.

I upgraded to ML and immediately after I noticed the entire MBP freezing when it woke from sleep. I deleted /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
and then immediately rebooted. Seems to be working great now!

Same here (iMac 2012).

I have prevented it to hang, disabling the option to Spin down the Hard Disk upon sleep. It wont save as much energy as previously when idle, but at least it works.

I just updated to 10.9 and had the same wake up issue.

Deleting the file worked! Thank you!

Deleting power management plist file seems to help.

10.8.5. Slow wakeup. Seemed to involve wireless. If I disabled wireless prior to sleep, the system was more likely to wake up correctly. However, it often took several minutes. Happened on more than one wireless network, so I do not believe it was related to the building wifi.

Deleting the power management profile seemed to work. (Actually, I always rename such files. Deleting is always risky, no matter how many people say it works.)
