10.8.3 - to - Mavricks

hi ... I just got a new mini - i7
came with 10.8.3

I have CS6 running - works fine so far.

I know that I can upgrade to Mavricks ...

will CS6 and over-all performance of mac be better with Mavricks
or could it possibly be worse
due to possibly more demanding system needs of the computer ?

You shouldn't upgrade to Mavericks until you're absolutely certain that everything you use (hardware and software) works with it without problems. Even then, you're still asking for trouble. Do a Google search and you'll see all kinds of problems that people have/have had.

Better to wait until at least 10.9.3 if you can.

What are you currently running hardware wise? Because obviously Mavericks will run more smoothly on newer hardware and should work smoothly on older hardware.

The odds are better that newer hardware will be a better transition than something older.

running a old CRT apple studio display
and a USB 2.0 matias keyboard ... old logitech optical mouse .

other than that I run CS6 for software
and ran into the issue ...
If I stay with 10.8.5 ... how can I get - Pages - Numbers - other older
Mac APS ??? any advice ???

Or should I just say F it and load on Mavericks and hope for the best ?

Maybe there would be no issues at all ???

OS X 10.8 supports the Last Compatible Version feature in the Mac App Store. You will be able to download the last version of what ever program you want that was compatible with your OS. This feature is not present versions of OS X prior to 10.8. Needless to say you will have no problems for a while getting new apps or even older ones.

My suggestion (if you want to try Mavericks) is to install it onto an external drive first, and do some test boots and experimentation with it -- BEFORE you commit yourself to it.

If the results don't suit you, you can just erase the external copy, and "go on as before"...

Good thought .... but how would one do that ?
I dont think the app store gives options as to where to download the OS ?
And ... If it did get Mav on an extrenal can I boot from it - and how ?
It's a USB 1 tb Weastern Digital .

Alternate approach:
- Use CarbonCopyCloner to create a bootable clone of your -current- internal drive (with your old OS) onto the external backup drive.
- Upgrade the OS on the internal drive
- Now, if you run into problems, you can always "re-clone" the contents of the external back to the internal, and be where you were before the upgrade….
