Never had a problem like this before.

10.8.4 refuses to install, tried several restarts over several days. The strangest software I have is a Parallels virtual machine for Windows 7.

It's just a plain old 27" iMac Mid 2010, 29.3 i7, 12 GB RAM, ATi HD 5750.

Usually very reliable and a strong performer since 2010!

I hate to be stupid, but I really can't figure this out.

It's not like I *need* 10.8.4 instead of 10.8.3, of course, but I'm fearful that it's a sign of trouble ahead.

I'm a rolling stone.
Your post is a bit confusing, are you trying to update to 10.8.4 from 10.8.3?
With Software Update?
If it is both yes then try and download 10.8.4 Combo Updater directly from Apple Downloads and apply it.

Please detail what you do, what happens when you do it, and what doesn't happen that you expect to happen.
Are there any error messages? What is their exact text?

Apple --> Software Update --> OX X Update 10.8.4 --> Update --> Restart Required --> Restart is still at 10.8.3 and no number of retries fixing it

Thank you. Trying that now...but the download seems to be frozen!

It's a conspiracy!!

Download from the link below, reapply.(If you haven't done so)

About OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo)

Edit: Repair permissions if this also stalls.

The Combo Update worked.

I have to say, though, that I wonder about something: After perusing some of the other trouble threads, I ejected a 32 GB flash card that was in an adapter in a USB slot.

It's possible the Software Update would have worked if I hadn't been a nincompoop and left that flash card in a USB slot! :)

Thanks, everyone, for your help!

Same Problem

Hi, I have been having the same problem with my Macbook Pro. It is currently running OSX 10.8.3 and I'm trying to download the combo pack from the Software Update. It was estimating the download time as two days so I stopped it and repaired permissions. Now after downloading from the link above it estimates taking 96 hours.. Does anyone know why it won't download? My internet is working fine, should I not be on wifi?

Maybe restart comp or use different browser. Ethernet works better, but wifi shouldn't lead to that long of a download time.

Mine was estimating several hours of download time (i'm on ethernet). I cancelled the download and started again and it took 2 minutes.

If you haven't updated yet (still have 10.8.3), you might want to wait. I've been having issues with safari (6.0.5) crashing often (or lag, have to restart computer) and seeing people have wifi and other issues as well.

But, if you have to have it, is this the link you are using for combo update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659?
