100 MB limit on cellular design non-sense

Just mess finding… The next one:

On iPhone, on cellular it is not possible to download app over 100 MB in size. It will alert to connect via WiFi. But use the same iPhone and cellular connection as hotspot for iPad, and you can download apps (on iPad) without any size limitation, even games over 1GB.
Another -1 for iPhone.

It's not really silly. I was just thinking the same thing will I tried to download a game. I'm no where near wifi and I would like to download and play a game but can't because of the limit.

The limit really shouldn't even exist anymore.

What makes it even more nonsensical is that I can download a 300MB audiobook from inside Audible, stream GBs of video via Netflix, Amazon and my home Plex server, and upload unlimited photos and videos to any cloud service I want via cellular. Except iCloud and anything else Apple themselves control. If I wasn't trying to be less cynical about things I'd say Apple were trying to avoid any potential class action lawsuits due to data overage charges. Wish they'd give us an option to use cellular if we wanted

Ugh I first contacted Apple iPhone Support about this and they told me it was a carrier issue that they set the limit. I told her that I've read many postings about this issue on many forums and was sure it was an IOS app store issue and she assured me it was carrier issue. So I contacted my carrier and they said not their issue. I think took the same sim card out of my iPhone and put it in my Android phone and it did give me a warning saying such files was large and if using Cell Data that additional charges may apple before of data usage. I just clicked continued and it downloaded. So it has to be an iOS issue and Apple's techs have no clue. ugh...

So why does this even still exists on iOS? Who decided this an why I wonder? I'm really not fond of Apple and their proprietary software and it seems to just be getting worse and their solutions and such are just borderline unusable. I guess I should not care as I use my Android phone much more because of their silly proprietary OS but I feel I spent good money on my iPhone and Data Service so I want to get my money out of it until I feel it's fair. But Apparently Apple does not want to be fair and modern and usable. I don't understand why they do this...

apple is apple and I love these people who keep saying that hate apple - so leave. Because you have specific issues that 95% don't have but you love to hear yourself on forums. Hate what Apple does - leave and don't bother people. if you want to download 1/2 G apps on cellular = have fun with Android

It's just carriers sucking money from you, they tell you oh here's a low cost plan but don't tell you the average data usage of a smart phone on their network.

My average usage with Apple Music is probably upwards of 500 MB per day. 200 easily on a day I don't use it that much. A lot of third party apps send usage data back to their advertisers without you knowing so that game of Candy Crush (with facebook login) eats up 50 MB while you make it through all 5 lives.

I think an option to toggle this feature on and off might be the best solution for everyone.

That's because the iPad is treating your hotspot as a Wi-Fi connection. Of course it'll let you download anything on a hotspot.

Thing is, it's not the download of the app that's going to lead to massive data charges generally. It's using an app after download - where there are no limits - that's going to hit. As I said above I can download a 300-500MB audiobook without issue, stream GB after GB of Netflix, Amazon Video, or self hosted Plex content, upload photos or videos to non-Apple based cloud services (Google, Amazon, OneDrive, etc) all over my mobile connection and it's not a problem. Anything that's an Apple service (App Store, iCloud) and forget it, no mobile (cellular) uploading allowed, jog on say Apple. But it's not their restrictions they say, it's carriers. Seems not.

A simple toggle in the AppStore and iCloud settings "allow cellular" would fix this. Off by default, on for those who know what they're doing.

It's better if they add an option for users to turn on/off that limit. Or just simply remove the limit.

the dumbest comment i have read for awhile..

for example, i was doing some work and using lte connection while out from the work and participating in a seminar. i should have used some specific app from appstore but couldnt download it because it was larger than 100mb. i had to "imagine" how to use it rather than doing and using that app.

we are living a year 2016 and using lte speed and unlimited connections are available. not some old 56kbps modem time having a minute counting...

If I recall correctly you need to have a specific data plan before a carrier will open up the hotspot feature to you. The 100MB app limit on cellular is independent of the hotspot feature.
