$100 to spend on...

an upgrade on my future mbp (base model). I don't know much about the technical side of computers, so would it be more beneficial to

1. upgrade memory to 1GB 667 DDR2, 2 X 512 SO-DIMMs from the 512 MB 667 DDR2 1 SO DIMM

or

2.upgrade hard drive to 100GB from 80GB

I'd definitely go with the ram, 20gb really isn't that much of a difference (unless you're going to a 7200rpm HDD) if you need the space, buy an external with alot more than 20gb, for a lot less. Buy the ram.

I don't like external drives either but if you want bang for your buck I'd go with the ram. IMO

you can always upgrade the ram later, the HD can be too, but is much more work.

However, i think the Ram will make more of a difference now.

Upgrade RAM and get a 1GB stick you can, its only $120 on data mem. 512, from everything I read is bare minimum to run OSX Tiger.

I will be using this mbp for about 4 years, which is why I was wondering if maybe it'd be worth it in the long run to add the hard drive space. What kind of a difference will I see from 512MB to 1GB?

Search it in the forums but Macs love ram. Some people were saying they could see some apps twice as fast, 512 will get the job down but 1 gb will make it a lot snappier.

Get the drive because you can always add RAM later.
Also, Apple is charging $100 for an extra 512 stick. Macsolutions.com has 1Gb sticks for $119.

512, from everything I read is bare minimum to run OSX Tiger.

Tiger can run on a minimum of 256MB of RAM; I ran it on my iBook G3 with 384MB and it was pretty good, until my HDD died.

I say upgrade the HDD, but only if you think you might need the space in the future. RAM is a snap to upgrade, while an HDD upgrade is costly, hard to do yourself, and might (I'm not sure) void your warranty since you're opening up and modifying a part of the machine that isn't meant to be opened up and modified by the end user.

I think I'll go for the HD then. It seems like more space would be better for me right now, and when I have the money I can add RAM.
