1024*576 in Handbrake vs Apple TV preset?

I've encoded a lot of my shows at the highest res the iPad can show, 1024*576 videos. I'm sure it will look fantastic. My videos are all 720p or 1080p.

However, they won't sync to my iPhone. I believe AppleTV preset will. Is there a big quality drop going down to AppleTV. I'm wondering if it would be worth having them on my iPhone, even though I'd likely rarely watch them on the small screen when I get my iPad.

Also, high profile for 1024 encodes? Time is of no issue.

Note: I don't have an iPad, but I'm encoding my videos with Handbrake while awaiting international launch.

I'm just also thinking that yeah, iPhones don't support the really nice highest quality videos of iPads, but if that rumored 960*640 iPhone res update comes to fruition when I update this summer, it very likely will support at least 720p so my videos will be fine (and yes I'll be upgrading).
 
Is there a question here?

Videos encoded for ATV never played on my phone if I tried to import through iTunes. I don't know why. I hear it can work. Videos that are 720p won't play on the iPhone iirc.

I encoded a 720p video and it won't load on my phone.
 
With a screen that small (not to mention a screen that isn't high definition anyway) you shouldn't notice any difference as long as they're straight rips from DVD.

The op states his source material is 720p or 1080p. He should encode at the highest possible rez for the device which is 1024 x 576.

I think this might be what you're looking for.
 
I've been converting all my 1080p and 720p videos down to 1024 width, by whatever the height happens to work out to. I use H.264 in an MP4 container with AAC Core Audio anywhere from 128-320 kbps.

I'm pretty confident everything will sync over and play well on my 3G, but only time will tell.

They will. I use 320Kbps ACC audio and it plays fine despite Apple's spec claim of 160Kbps.
 
I found this How to Create iPad Formatted Videos Using HandBrake or FFMpeg which provides iPad presets for Handbrake.

Just DL the presets and save to disk then open Handbrake, go to presets, import, and import the saved plist.

I am attempting an encode of a bluray .mkv of the Life TV series and the preview worked using the imported iPad Full (A 4×3 aspect ratio at 1024×576) plist.

Fingers Crossed ;)
 
With 720p or 1080p video would I notice a difference between 1024x576 and AppleTV preset.
 
Anyone put blue rays on their iPad yet? Considering trying avatar blue ray on it but the space is just a lot!

Yes but I use native 1024 instead of 1280 (720) to save space (smaller file size) and increase pic quality (no downscaling).
 
I or my family watch my library on numerous devices (Mac Mini HTPC on a 50" 1080p plasma using PLEX, :apple:TV, iPad, iPhone, 2nd gen iPod Touch). Rather than encode versions for all devices and quickly eat up my external storage, I do 2 versions (for my blu-ray rips), the first 720p using :apple:TV preset but modified using custom anamorphic settings (helpful for movies that with resolutions less than 1280x720, i.e. Apollo 13 is 1280x544 but with :apple:TV preset using custom anamorphic I can increase is to 1694x720). This plays great on PLEX, :apple:TV, and the iPad. The second version is done using Universal preset for playback on iPhone or iPod touch. The resolution is higher than native for either device but plays great and should future iPhones/Touches have better resolution, should provide a better picture. If it wasn't for my kids iPod touches, I'd probably just do the first version and use Air Video on our iPhones but since they don't always have access to wifi, I do the 2nd version as well.

For my DVDs, I encoded using Universal preset--plays on all devices nicely.

I realize this doesn't give absolute best results for each individual device but was my ideal solution to having numerous copies and huge external storage.

I downloaded his presets, and checked out the ipad-full.plist. I want my DVDs that I'm transferring to my iPad to play full screen. But I clicked on the picture settings tab in Handbrake and the size was only set at 640x480. Is that right? I thought the ipad was like 1024 or something like that.
 
I encode my 1080p Blu-Rays or 720p MKV files to 720p files with Handbrake's universal settings. Then I encode them again to 720x480 files (SD). I then use MetaX to tag them and combine them to an HD-SD entry in my iTunes library. The HD version syncs to Apple TV and iPad, the SD version syncs to my iPhone.

For DVD's, I encode widescreen content to 720x480 and full screen content to 640x480. Everything plays good, syncs good, looks good.

How do you rip the BlueRay DVDs? I thought Macs won't read BluRay? Also, I use MacTheRipper, which work with BluRay. What do you use?

I have separate HTPC that I use. The software required is AnyDVD HD (to remove encryption) and Clown to do the ripping (I rip to a ISO container (M2TS)) files. I also have a 14TB unRAID server that I store all my BD's, HD DVD's and recorded HDTV.
 
Alright so I've converted a few DVDs over to my iPad. I'm having an issue with size now. I just used handbrake to convert a 1 hour 23 min film using the Apple universal setting, and the resulting file is 4.62GB. I downloaded one of the pirates of the Caribbean films a while ago, which is 1:43, and the file size is just over a gig. I don't understand how to convert and reduce file size. I did slide the constant quality bar up to like 75% rather than 60%.
 
I just converted 7 videos using the handbrake apple tv setting - think there will be any noticeable difference between that and the new iPad formatted settings?

Someone stated above that the screen is so small that changes in resolution wont be really noticeable so I am curious if anyone has done a comparison and has screen shots.

The apple tv setting looks pretty good to me but if the iPad setting is an improvement I will go that route.

You answered your own question. Leave the constant quality bar where its at. You more than doubled the file size, but did you get double the quality? Highly doubt it. If you had left the bar where it was at, you would have had a good quality file in the 1.25 - 1.75 GB range.

The Universal setting is just that... a file that plays nice with all of Apple's devices (and many non-Apple devices) with minimal tradeoff in quality.

Thanks a bunch. I've not used Handbrake before, so learning about it (and encoding in general) is new to me. Sometimes it's just better to ask then to spend an hour and a half encoding it only to have to do it over again.
