1024mb reading at 512mb (mac mini)

Hello! I cracked open my new mac mini and replaced the 256mb ram with a new 1024mb ram chip. I followed all the guidelines and researched everything (I thought) but it only seems to read 512 of the available 1024mb?

I checked the system specs thing and it says its using 512. Is there anything I can do have it read correctly? Did I order the wrong spec ram? (I ordered 1024mb pc3200 400mhz DDR ram) Thank you very much for any assistance!

Im sure CanadaRAM will post soon as he's the expert, but in the mean time it sounds to me like you have a type of RAM the mini doesnt read properly, you obviously installed it fine as it recognises the memory but it may be the wrong type of chip that the mini cannot fully recognise,

I suggest you return it if you can and buy from a company like crucial who guarentee compatibility,

PC3200 RAM is PowerMac RAM... PC 2700 is the RAM you needed for the mac mini. Where did you order it from?

I had this problem when I bought ram for my mini in may. The chip is probably broken and perhaps half the chip is not soldered correctly. That was aparently the problem from a batch of ram when I bought mine. PC3200 ram is compatible with the mac mini but will just operate at the PC2700 speed. Good luck with a replacement stick.

awesome thanks for the replys guys! I got it from pcwonderinc.com I'll shoot them an email or a call - supposedly theyre pretty good about getting your satisfaction. So do you suggest I order a pc2700 replacement?

PC3200 RAM should work just fine. The mini does at run PC2700 speeds, but RAM rated at a given speed will usually work one step slower. Apple actually ships a PC3200 chip in the mini's that I've seen.

As to not seeing all of the RAM, it sounds like you have a bad chip to me.
