Ok I plugged in my Apple TV to my Sony TV via component and I was able to select 1080i

Is there any difference between 1080i over HDMI or Component? this was pre AppleTV take 2.
just about to get a new device that only has HDMI dont really want to get an HDMI splitter

It wouldn't be a significant difference; at least not enough difference to warrant buying an HDMI splitter.

I have made innumerable A/B comparisons between component on one hand and DVI and HDMI on the other and have never seen any difference. This is an issue that has been beat to death over at AVS Forum and my conclusion seems to represent the consensus of posters there. I am using a component connection with my Apple TV and the PQ it provides is great.
