I've tried asking Apple this, but they can't seem to understand what it is I'm asking...so I'll ask y'all...

I have a 1080i TV, and a 2nd Generation Apple TV. Up until now when I purchase movies I've been purchasing them at 720p. If I switch my settings over to 1080p for downloads, will I still be able to play them on my current setup? I assume it would be down-converted if it does play.

I don't want to invest in a new (1080p) TV or Apple TV at the moment, but would like to download (future proof my downloads) at 1080p IF it will play on my current setup (I don't want to download now at 1080p but not be able to watch them on my current setup).

Any assistance would be appreciated!

Yes, it will down convert them.

If money is your reason for not upgrading he ATV2, I recommend eBaying it for $150+ and then buying the ATV3 for $100.

You could sell your old ATV2 possibly for more than you paid for it.

Handbrake (new nightly build) has an ATV3 preset, try it on one of your 1080p sources and see if it works on your ATV2

I just sold a first gen Apple TV for $90. :)

Thanks everyone. I don't mind upgrading the ATV. It's just the TV I don't want to right now. That's great that it will still play on a 1080i TV (just downconvert).
