So I was having Airport problems with the update so the Apple store told me to use my OS X install c.d. to roll back to 10.4.9. I did that and selected the options they told me (not to erase and install but to save settings). I had 50 gigs free, now I have 39. What happened??

Have you checked for duplicates? Also, download a program like OmniDiskSweeper (google it) and run it, you will most probably find what takes up all the space.

Well, it sounds like you did an archive and install. Therefore, it archived your old files, which is taking up the space.
