Apple plans to release new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays in mid to late 2024, according to a report today from DigiTimes, citing supply chain sources. The report indicates that some Apple suppliers have already started to expand their touchscreen panel capacity to prepare for the launch.

The report claims that the new iPad Pro models will be equipped with hybrid OLED displays that are made with a combination of flexible and rigid materials, which could contribute to a thinner and lighter design compared to the current models.

OLED technology would enable the next iPad Pro displays to have increased brightness, higher contrast ratio, greater color accuracy, and lower power consumption compared to existing models with LCD panels. Apple already uses OLED displays for the latest iPhone and Apple Watch models, excluding the lower-end iPhone SE.

iPad Pro models released in 2017 and later support ProMotion, allowing for a variable refresh rate between 24Hz and 120Hz. The switch to OLED would likely allow for the refresh rate to drop down even further to 10Hz or lower to save battery life. iPhone 14 Pro models can reach as low as 1Hz while in always-on display mode.

Currently, the larger iPad Pro has a 12.9-inch display, so the 13-inch model would be slightly larger. Apple reportedly aims to decrease the size of the bezels on future iPad Pro models, but it's unclear if that will apply to the next models.

The report claims that Apple suppliers will likely stop shipments of the current iPad Pro models with mini-LED backlighting by mid 2024, suggesting that those models might be discontinued instead of sticking around as a lower-cost option.

By now, it has been widely rumored that Apple will be launching new iPad Pro models with OLED displays in 2024. A previous report from Korean website The Elec indicated that mass production of the next iPad Pro models would begin in the first half of 2024, with the most likely launch months for the devices being March or June at this point.

Other new features rumored for the next iPad Pro models include an M3 chip and a redesigned Magic Keyboard with a larger trackpad and an aluminum casing.

Just a few days ago you put a post suggesting people not to buy iPads right now because new iPads are coming “soon”. Looks like “soon” is mid to late next year. Lol
Yeah that was funny. "They're coming soon", "in 2024". 2024 is not soon, it's March at the earliest, and Pros are usually released in the fall, not spring. Next they'll come up with "Don't buy the iPhone 15 because the 16 will be released soon". Same time span.

I just don't get it...you can make a screen out of diamonds and put 128 gigs of ram in there and it's STILL gonna be the same iPad as always as long as it's limited by the iPhone os...sorry, meant iPad os.

Sounds like you want a MacBook, so buy one of those. Those of us who actually use iPads don't want or need a full fledged desktop OS on it.

Here is what I think is gonna happen.

Basic iPads and iPad Mini updated to A16 and A17 in October.

iPad Air gets updated to M3 in spring.

iPad Pro’s get M3 in the fall at the next iPhone event.

That means we wouldn’t see the entry level M4 in any Apple computer until around spring 2025, followed by M4 Pro, Max and Ultra between June to fall 2025.

Well, we've been reading that they will be released in 2024 for weeks now. How many articles are we going to get when yet another "analyst" predicts they will be released in 2024.
Three.

Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three.

Sorry, Holy Grail reference just sprang to mind. 🤭

September or October 2024 would be about 2 years between models. Don’t think Apple would go that long but who knows. Especially if current sales okay.

I have OLED burn-in phobia. It may be wrong. Just saying :)
I'm just annoyed at the ever-shrinking options for displays that don't flicker and induce headaches. I'm really surprised it has been 6 years since the iPhone X and they still haven't released a single device with DC dimming instead of the awful flickering PWM displays.

So glad I locked in my 2022 iPad Pro last year. Looks like it's going to be the last good one before Apple ruins it with OLED.

Instant buy and to upgrade from my M1 12.9 1TB
Same. The M1 will end up being a "laptop" at work so I can go to sites my intranet blocks. :) I love mini-LED for most things, but if I want to read in bed then it just doesn't get dark enough and has a lot of blooming around white lines and such. Really looking forward to OLED.

So, does this mean mini-LED is a bust?

Depends on your definition of bust. 2-3 years after an OLED iPad, you can expect a micro-LED one next. Always new tech on the horizon.

If they don't move the camera to the landscape position I have zero interest.
Totally agree. Can not believe they have not done that by now. And how can it not come out until mid to late 2024? Apple is really losing it. The iPad Pro’s used to come out like clockwork in Spring every year and now one release in over 3 years.

I was thinking about how Apple could turn the iPad Pro into a SLR killer, my dream was for it to happen on the iPhone one day but it’s just too small to house a large sensor and optics. So I was thinking since their are rumors it will get 4tb of storage, and OLED screen, and maybe an M3 chip with more than 16gb of ram… Why not out a full frame Sony sensor straight from a A74 and instead of relying on tiny iPhone lenses, just have a lens mount just like a actual camera?

Here is why that makes sense, nobody pockets an iPad, if we carry them they go in full size backpacks just like an actual DSLR/SLR camera. Also, nobody walks around with an iPad in hand in public as if it’s a phone, we have our iPhones for that. So when you need to take a quick snapshot of a sweet Lambo, or a ufo in the sky, you use your phone. So it wouldn’t matter if you can’t whip your iPad out in a second and snap a quick pic.

So here we are, imagine a professional camera app just for the iPad, all the power of an M3 chip, a true full frame sensor, and the computational power combined. So when you need it you mount your lens to the iPad and fire away, for any heavy lenses you just mount it to a tripod. I think to be strong enough they’d have to use something other than aluminum, stainless is way too heavy, so titanium like the iPhone 15 pro would work.

Imagine, just imagine with me, taking sports, landscape, and wildlife photos with a 600mm lens, attached to the biggest viewfinder you’ve ever seen, with a lightning fast touch screen for all your controls, as you grip your cool titanium iPad. Imagine a zoom lens where all you need to do to zoom in or out is just a pinch away. You take your pics, and instantly edit them, and upload them to social media, bypassing the need for sd cards, uploading to a computer, and stuff like that. Someone could even make grips for it with a shutter button built in.

Apple went all in on their Vision pro headset, I don’t see why they couldn’t also go all in on photography and change the game in this area one day as well.

It’s been over ten years since this post, let’s do it Apple!

The M3 iPad Pro's are not coming until next year anyway. Its not strange for Apple to have large gaps between updates for many of its products.
