My 11" iPad Pro 2nd Gen is in a case but that doesn't protect the sides. Especially the rare time that it slide out and hit the pavement. The corner has some damage and the glass is cracked. Of course AppleCare ran out in March so this will be out of pocket. It looks like Apple will replace it for $549. with their out of warranty program. I'm trying to figure out if I should go with that or... buy a current generation 11" iPad Pro for $1099. The difference is $550.00. I'm guessing and I could be wrong with this, I _might_ be able to see this one for around $400. I checked one site to see how much they would pay. It was $287. Maybe I can get more locally? If that's the case, I'd get into the current iPad for an additional $150 over what I'd pay to replace this with the previous model.

What would you do?

Most of the time these days I try to live with cosmetic damages as long as possible, although it sucks looking at a broken screen all day. I'd try to make it work and use it until it falls apart entirely.

If it were me, I'd just leave it since it seems to be over the bezel and not affecting anything. How often do you upgrade? Would you be getting a new one in a year or two anyway?

Also, pure speculation here, but I feel like we should be seeing new iPad Pros fairly soon (late fall or spring). It's on MacRumor's do not buy list.

I would definitely not buy the current iPad Pro at this point, because as said by @iStorm, there is probably a new gen coming this fall. You also have to consider what the 4th gen would do better than the 2th gen, the difference in usability between the two is not that big. Maybe the 5th gen will be more worth it, but I don't find a compelling reason to upgrade to 4th gen except if you want to take advantage of Stage Manager and the Thunderbolt port.

That said, I don't know if you should repair your current iPad or keep it as is. It is still usable, but I know I would definitely be bothered by a screen damaged like that.

Anyway, I recommend you wait a few weeks until the rumored October event, and then you'll decide what is the best for you.

I bought this in the Spring of 2020 and have been thinking about upgrading when the next one is released. My Apple products are usually well taken care of so friends are eager to buy them when it's time for me to buy something new. That helps offset the cost. One slip equals not this time for that.

There isn't any issue with how it functions and it doesn't look like the cracks are growing/no glass falling out. I could just continue to use it like normal and wait it out. Are new iPads usually released in the Spring or Fall? I think I recall getting a couple in November over the years.

I did some research and found the follow for past iPad Pro release dates -

  • iPad Pro range (2018): November 2018
  • iPad Pro range (2020): March 2020
  • iPad Pro range (2021): May 2021
There are rumors that the new model might be presented at the Sept or Oct event so I guess I'll wait to see what happens.

As it’s just small cracks on the bezel area, I’d probably just wait until the new ones are released and/or the 2021 Pros hit the refurb store or get steeper discounts.

Is that the apple folio?

Yes it is. I like it but... not side protection. My iPad goes everywhere with me. It's mounted next to me in the car while I'm driving. I hardly ever have an issue with the case but one time it slipped and hit the ground. The only time I wished it had more protection.

mmm, I use that folio case for my new 11" M1, I tried the otterbox folio but didn't like the plastic clear back, was scratched out of the box so returned it.
Really want the black nomad leather folio but it's like $250AUD here.
Might get AC after seeing that.

I would get the M1 now and sell that one, the new one won't be till 3-5/23 imo, will be more $$ too.

I also would wait till at least September/October.

Just bought my first iPad ever, an IPP 12.9, and was just not comfortable with the exposed edges with the folio case — stylish yes (and light), but not enough protection. All it takes is one accident and I wasn’t going to take that chance, even with AC. At least the damage is pretty contained and cosmetic. Hopefully it continues working until you decide your next step.

Given that its mostly in the bezel area, I would use some black duct tape to cover it up, this way you don’t have to see it all the time. Personally I would not pay for repairing. As others have said, new models may be just around the corner.

I was at the Apple Store yesterday so I asked about my iPad. I was told they swap it for a new one for $499. I think I, going to continue to use this one until the updated version comes out. Then I’ll see if any friends want to buy it for the cost of swapping it. If not, I’ll swap it then probably sell the replacement for what I can get for it.

When you get a new iPad look at getting an Otterbox Defender case. I have a Mini 4 from 2015 and it is still in mint condition and I haven’t exactly been kind to it or babied it. I’ve had this thing bounce on hardwood floors dozens of times and it has sustained no scratches or dinks. I take it out once per year to clean any dust/dirt accumulation and I have observed no cosmetic issues. I think with expensive tech, you’re better safe than sorry… I have an Otterbox Defender case for my newer Mini 5 which I got in 2020 and both iPads look like twins, lol.

I believe that's the case I have on my iPhone. Love it on the phone! It's been put to the test a few times. Phone is still perfect. I might go that route with the iPad. I prefect a case like I have but want to give it additional protection. Or, upgrade the case after Applecare runs out.

The damage looks pretty stable.
It would be worth considering a glass screen protector.
The adhesive will fill the cracks, and the new surface will ensure a good surface to touch.
As a result it will be far less visible, more stable, and durable.
obviously not as good as a new screen, but an acceptable option.

why do you not just replace the screen? or am I missing something? - if it works perfectly apart from the screen then just get a new screen installed..

Instead of going with $549 for a repair or $1099 for a replace I would get the iPad Air instead, you get the M1 Processor, it will fit most of your current accessories, and you get to pick a cool color.

does Apple really repair ? or they give you the same model for that 549 price . I am in the same position , ipad pro 12.9 2nd gen , will go myself to Regent street shop to see what really they do offer, someone above said they give you the new one.

if you are happy with it I would probably pay for the new screen/swap. But if you see some hefty features of the newest generation that would improve your experience then use this as an excuse and go upgrade

I've thought about having the screen fixed but I don't know if the damage will cause the new screen to not fit property.

I've also been weighing if I really need a Pro. Actually, I can tell you that I don't. I don't do anything special with my iPad. It's mainly used for Waze, music, internet and playing games once in awhile. Nothing that a regular iPad can't handle. But I like to have the most powerful available for most things. I may have to rethink that to save myself some money.

This same thing happened to me. I would try to sell it on ebay, and buy the iPad Air. I use the keyboard case that doesnt protect the sides. I did not notice a difference between the air and the pro's screen. I like using touch ID better than face ID.

Edit: THe only real difference I noticed was the lack of the pro speakers.
